Luke Hagele attends the Virginia Governor's German Immersion Academy at VCU

Luke Hagele, an 11th grader at Salem High School, arrived at VCU for the Virginia Governor's German Immersion Academy on June 27. Hagele will learn by really using the language in the cafeteria, the dorm, on the soccer field, as well as in the classroom.

Until July 19 he will live his life completely in German to increase his ability to use the language. The Virginia Department of Education sponsors six Governor's Foreign Language Academies each summer where students are nurtured and language skills are cultivated. Participating students in all programs were selected through statewide competition. CBS News and USA Today have featured the Adademies as examples of innovative foreign language programs.

Every morning Academy participants attend five unique and creative classes. Students will also be introduced to a second foreign language, taught through German.
