Pumpkinfest is this Saturday, on Halloween!

WSLQ-Q99 FM will hold the 10th annual Pumpkinfest to benefit CHIP (Child Health Investment Partnership), at the Salem Farmer's Market on Halloween Day, Saturday, October 31st from 11AM-2PM. Note: the Salem Merchants will be offering trick-or-treating from 10AM-11AM. The event is also sponsored by Kroger, First Team Auto Mall, B&H Computers (an authorized dealer of U.S. Cellular), and Salem Parks & Recreation Special Events. The event will be hosted by Q99's Dick Daniels and David Page.One of the main events will be the Chefs vs. Surgeons Pumpkin-Carving Contest. Approximately 29 chefs and surgeons from the Roanoke Valley will participate. (Pumpkins will be carved prior to the event and will be displayed at the event. The elaborate pumpkins will be auctioned on-stage and via a silent auction with all of the funds raised going to CHIP). Also, awards will be given for the "People's Choice" and the pumpkin that raises the most money for C.H.I.P.

Other activities that will take place are a kids costume contest for ages 0-15 with prizes sponsored by First Team Auto Mall and judges will include Abby Erdman, Miss Smith Mountain Lake Outstanding Teen, Miranda Bousman, Miss Smith Mountain Lake Pre-Teen, and Holly Farris, Miss William Byrd Outstanding Teen. There will also be carnival and inflatable games with prizes, hayrides, pumpkin crafts, an old-fashioned bake sale, caricatures by Kyle Edgell, balloon art by the Fun & Games Party Company, Animal Encounters from Mill Mountain Zoo, pictures of kids with QBEAR from Photographs by Kathy, and refreshments (including Valleydale Hotdogs on Heiner's Buns, Frito-Lay Chips, Pepsi Products, Vito's Pizza and samples of ice cream from Ben & Jerry's). The first 199 children will receive a free pumpkin from Kroger! The first 1000 children will receive a Halloween bag with candy courtesy of the event sponsors!

Admission is just $1.00 for adults and children in costume will get in free! There will be nominal charges for games, activities, and food with all funds going to CHIP.

CHIP promotes the health of medically under-served children within the greater Roanoke Valley by ensuring comprehensive health care, strengthening families, and coordinating community resources through a public/private partnership. CHIP serves an average of 1,500 needy children annually.
