Flooding update: All streets now open in Salem

Mike Stevens from the City of Salem sends the following news:

Crews from the Streets and Maintenance Department came in at 3am this morning and were able to get all of the debris and mud cleared along Mill Lane and Riverside Dr.

As a result, all streets in Salem are now clear and open, including the Mill Lane Bridge.

Here are more photos from around Salem showing the soggy mess that the remnants of Ida have created on Mill Lane and Riverside Drive. (You can view them in the slideshow above or in this gallery format; the videos are in the middle of the set.)

There's now a pond beside the playground at Longwood Park, although it's probably not good to swim in (maybe a new duck pond?) and there are also photos from under the bridge near the Hanging Rock Battlefield trail.

Flooding update: Sump pumps are big sellers in Salem

The impact of almost 48-hours of nearly constant rains has raised a spike in "home improvement" efforts, specifically involving wet basements and leaky roofs.

"Normal customers are rained out, but the basement-flooded people are coming in," said Eddie Hopkins, manager of Northwest True Value Hardware on West Main Street in Salem.

Flooding update: Colorado Street Bridge is open

Fire and Rescue personnel were just able to free up the debris and avoid closing the Colorado St. Bridge.

I thank you for your patience and understanding.

As of this time – the BRIDGE IS OPEN – in both directions.

Residents at Riverside Trailer Park are being evacuated, according to Salem City spokesman Mike Stevens.

Flood warning in effect for Salem

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Salem and Roanoke County -- along with eastern Montgomery County, northwestern Bedford County Craig County, Buena Vista, Botetout County, Lexington, Covington, southern Bath County, Rockbridge County and Alleghany County.

Flooding is expected in Montgomery and Roanoke counties and in Salem along the South Fork and Upper Roanoke River and its tributaries.
