Photos: Fort Lewis Elementary gets help from RC's Rooney to fundraise for the Children's Miracle Network

The gym was packed with smiles and cheers when Roanoke College's mascot Rooney the Hawk and several of players from Roanoke's men's and women's basketball teams visited Fort Lewis Elementary on Wednesday, October 28, to help the kids raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.

For each basket Rooney netted, the kids counted it towards their pledges. After Rooney had his turn - stomping a little when he didn't score and celebrating with the whole school when he did, the students got their chance to make a few baskets with the help of Roanoke College basketball players Rebecca Bays of Vinton, Rachel Hawkins from Winchester, Jaleesa Osborne from Glouster, Corey Poindexter from Pulaski, and Papa Fall from Senegal.

One of the school's themes for Red Ribbon Week was "Keep your head in the game! Fort Lewis is too smart to do drugs."

The women's basketball program at Roanoke is ranked first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the preseason poll, and the men's basketball program is ranked sixth.

Photos of the North Salem Tigers U10 girls soccer team

These photos are from the North Salem Tigers U10 girls soccer team of the Salem Parks and Recreation League, and along with them, proud coach Todd Neff sent this account of their great season to go along with the pictures:

"This age group doesn't keep official rankings but our girls did VERY WELL. We lost our first game, made some adjustments then won the next 8 games in a row. Our record was 8-1 and we (unofficially) came in 1st place in our division. The next 2 best teams came in at 5-2-1 by my account.

Our girls were a joy to coach and improved DRASTICALLY as the season progressed. We avenged our only loss (4-2) with a 1-0 victory!

Info on the Coach and assistant coach: My name is Todd Neff and I'm the Mechanical Engineering Manager at ITT Night Vision (coach). My wife, Debbie Neff, was the assistant coach and team coordinator. We loved coaching and look forward to being involved in Salem Parks and Rec league next season."

The team included Alexa Warme (forward), Sydney Willinghan (defense), Molly Willingham (forward), Marlie Gregory (halfback), Isabel Baynum (goalie), Mackenzie Neff (forward), Saylor Bane (defense).
