More on check spending incentives

Happy Friday!

This story in USA Today gives more examples of retailers that are luring consumers with incentives to spend their federal tax rebate checks.

I've blogged about a few of these examples, but some others in this story are Home Depot and Staples.

Also, another story discusses how the travel industry is rolling out different promotions in time for the mailing of the rebate checks on May 2. With many people planning summer vacations right now, using tax rebate money for extra funding sure is tempting!

  1. This is from a grocer in the Northeast...
AUGUSTA, ME -- Shaw’s today announced a program that enables shoppers to exchange their government-issued economic stimulus or tax refund checks for a gift card with extra money.

Customers can redeem their checks for the gift cards in $300 increments, and stores will add an extra $30 to each card. They should bring their tax refund checks, along with government-issued identification, to customer service counters at their local stores.

This offer is available May 2 through July 31, at all Shaw’s stores in New England, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

  2. Jenny I read your story on the rebate checks and what retailers are offering but I have 1 question. What are they offering to those who have direct deposit?

  3. Hi, Greg,
If you had your check direct deposited, you still can use the funds for any of these incentives. If the retailer requires that you present your check, it might be best to ask them how to proceed if your money already is in your bank account. Hope that helps!
