Marking Ukrop's first year in Roanoke
Whether you’re fan of Ukrop’s Super Market or you're just looking for some freebies, you can help this grocer celebrate its first year in Roanoke. Tomorrow, the Richmond-based retailer will celebrate its one-year anniversary with free food samples and festive events.
Here are some of the activities going on between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Ukrop's Franklin Road store:
--Starting at noon, the grocer will give away slices of a custom-made Mill Mountain cake. It weighs more than 200 pounds and serves more than 400.
--There will be samples of certain food brands, including Homestead Creamery and Boar’s Head offerings.
--$2 snow cones will be sold. For every snow cone sold, Ukrop’s will donate a can of food to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
--From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., representatives from Appalachian Harvest Organic Growers in Abingdon will talk about their produce, sold at Ukrop’s.
--A kid’s composting event, led by Ukrop’s environmental workers, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
And here’s your chance to comment on Ukrop’s Roanoke store. If you’ve been there in the last year, what do you think about the store, its prices, foods, etc.? In your opinion, has it had a successful first year in business?

Love it!! Wish it had a grill/kitchen like many in Richmond do.

Ukrop's has the fried chicken and pizza bar, paninis cooked to order and the bistro bar and chef's case. I haven't been to Richmond in quite some time, so I'm not sure what they have that we don't... We like to eat there for dinner and then grocery shop. It's a nice, clean store, they have really friendly people and 95% of the stuff I buy is cheaper there or the same price as Kroger. I also like parking downstairs when it's raining or snowing.

JRo,
Thanks for the comment on the Roanoke Ukrop's. What is the grill/kitchen that you mentioned? It it like the Ukrop's cafe at the Roanoke store?

Love the store, love the prepared deli foods, great produce.

I like Ukrop's. The produce is very good and usually more variety than the other local stores. They often stock local and Richmond area foods when available.

Hats off to Ukrop's for buying local produced garden vegetables and keeping a clean store. On a rainy day seams the underground garage is full and ample spaces ground level out front. Easy access. Keep up those daily deliveries from Richmond. Thanks

The rest of the grocery stores in the valley could take a cue from Ukrop's.
Employees are much more friendly & willing to help.
Store is clean & fresh.
If you're going to spend all this money for food, might as well get "value" for your dollars.
Thank You, Ukrop's.
p.s. Dollar for dollar their prices are right on cue with the Kroger's & Food Lion's without all the hooey over "you're saving $ " with the preferred customer card!!!

I concur with Steve. The staff at Ukrop's is always friendly and helpful.
Another thing I like is that sale items are restocked, which I think Kroger is very bad about.
I also love the "Local Route" produce. It makes me feel better about my purchase, because I'm helping Virginians and it's also good for the environment since it has not been trucked across the US or from another country. Also, Ukrop's eggs are from Virginia.
I also love the convenience of the prepared foods and they are all tasty!
As an example of how great the service is, when I got married in October, my mother-in-law was hunting pots of mums for me to decorate the aisle. We couldn't find any mums for a decent price or that were still in bloom. We made the decision to use several bouquets instead. Ukrop's floral department had prepared the bouquets and boutonnières for our wedding, so I sent my MIL there to see Alison, the dept. manager. This was on Friday, the day before the wedding. Alison and her staff prepared 4 beautiful arrangements to match our colors and they were ready the same day. I'm sure that since Alison knew the flowers were for me and that I had purchased my wedding arrangements there made a difference, but I was still impressed! Not only were all the flowers beautiful, the price was great too!

I am grateful, not only for their friendly service, great food, and clean stores, but also for their committment to the community. They donated several items to our Vacation Bible School in the past year. It should also be noted that the cashiers and people bagging your groceries are very courteous. In fact walk into the store and I guarantee you will observe cashiers and baggers having real conversations with the shoppers. That's much better than the grunts you get at other area stores. Keep up the good work!

Ukrops is outstanding! Their deli is the best in the entire Roanoke area and it is so nice to buy fresh locally-grown produce. Their employees are superbly trained and customer oriented. Starting from one small store in Richmond, this is a great example of the American Dream!!

I'd go, but I have to go to Kroger's to get my Kenney's sauce to make Kenneyburgers anyway, so...
