Good news for local Starbucks fans

Local Starbucks fans can rest easy.

Today, the coffee retailer published a list of 600 stores that it plans to close through the first half of next year. No Starbucks in the Roanoke and New River Valleys are on the chopping block.

In fact, only five Starbucks across Virginia will close, based on the list. They are locations in Fredericksburg, Gainesville, Hampton, Newport News and Winchester.

The states with the most Starbucks closures include California, Florida and Texas.

Earlier this month, Starbucks announced plans to shutter 600 underperforming locations nationwide, after a decline in sales and earnings. To check out the full store list, click here.

  1. Speaking of closures, do you know why the dowtown Orange Dog is currently closed? I've only been over there once and it wasn't the greatest but I hate to see anyone close down.

Also, what's the word on the Bojangles on Peters Creek? They have missed the "May" opening they originally targeted. Are they going to get it open before August?

  2. When I read about Starbucks closing down stores today, I wasn't the least bit afraid of them filing for bankruptcy or closing down forever. I've been following the whole Starbucks ordeal on savvywallet.com. Even with the free iced coffee on Wednesday promotion, introduction of their fruity smoothies, and free wifi with gift card registrations. The only thing I'm worried about is not enough hotspots for wifi. There are several stores around my area that are closing down, and that's what I'm concerned about. I enjoy walking around the streets, plop down and always be able to find a signal because I know a Starbucks is near. The glory days are over.

  3. Greg,
Orange Dog in downtown apparently closed because the owner said he's trying to find a franchisee. I'm not sure why it's taking so long for it to open back up, though.
Also, about Bonjangles' on Peters Creek Road, the franchisee recently told me that he's planning to open the restaurant in the next several weeks. The building already is up, he's just working on the final details.

  4. New Starbucks to open in Wytheville in early August. To be located in shopping center just off Exit 70 of I-81.
