Tricks and treats at the malls

If you are carving out your trick-or-treating route for Friday, keep in mind that three area malls are taking part in the Halloween action.

On Friday, trick-or-treaters are welcome at participating retailers inside Valley View, Tanglewood and New River Valley malls.

At Tanglewood, the trick-or-treating begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

At Valley View and New River Valley malls, it lasts from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

I've enjoyed your blog over the last few months, and being a retailer myself, find the topics & responses enlightening.

I'd really love to see you approach the topic of "VALUE" for the money spent. I know you have to be careful on not stepping on toes, especially some of the larger merchants.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY and the economic climate out there exploits the consumer, which I find most frustrating!

Examples I've seen include specially packaged products which have the same packaging size but actually contain less product. Dog food @ Wallyworld in a 37.5 lb. Bag, whereas at other places it's a 40 lb. Bag. Or look at the meat section of "Wally's" where the fine print disclosure states that the weight includes 10% water !!! The classic sham has got to be antifreeze for your car. You can buy the same antifreeze you have for years at a dollar higher then the mixed 50/50 solution. 50% water and you save a dollar, or, you can get twice as much antifreeze for just a dollar more.

The stores themselves go out of their way to confuse the consumer when they claim to let us choose a product by the cost per unit number. Check out the bathroom tissue isle... One has the price per square inch, another price per sheet, another price per roll, and on and on. Years ago the big boxes started carrying name brand electronics. Have you ever noticed there is no way to cross reference the model number from the big box store to the independent? Not even compare models between two different big box merchants.

Penny wise & pound foolish, is appropriate today as it was back when that phrase was first canned!
