New Kroger fuel center planned for Salem
Another Kroger fuel center is planned for the Roanoke Valley, and this time, it will land in Salem.
Kroger plans to build a gasoline center adjacent to its Spartan Square store on West Main Street. Melinda Payne, director of planning for Salem, told me that a building permit was approved for this work last month.
I've left a message with a Kroger spokesman for more details, and I'll keep you updated once I find out more information.

This is a smart move by Kroger. Their gas discount program is well designed.

I think it is great that Kroger is investing in a new fuel center.I think the more competition the better!

Jenny,
I really didn't know where to post this but as a consumer I am always concerned about the safety of the food I buy and the food I consume when eating out. Recently my wife and I were at Sam's club in Roanoke. We were standing in line to check out behind a couple of guys with a cart full of frozen as well as fresh food. The fresh selection included (at least what we could see) beef and poultry, produce and fruit. My curiosity got to me and in a joking manner I asked how many people were in their family. They replied that they were in the restaurant business and shopped there for the supplies and food. I didn't really think much more about it until about 45 minutes later. We went to the Lowe's across the street and there they were again. When we left we saw their vehicle in the lot with the food still in it. My question is what kind of regulations are placed on these people to insure food safety? What if the fresh chicken was in the back of that van for an hour or more until refrigerated? How could one know if the food in a restaurant was safely purchased and transported? Does the Health Dept. or who ever inspects/licenses restaurants have any authority to regulate or monitor this practice. It really made us both question rather or not we should continue to dine out. I will say that they were very nice and even gave us the name of their establishment and I appreciate the fact that they did, they may have saved my life!
