Food seized at Salem bakery

Today, I've been reporting about unhealthy conditions at a Salem bread company. Federal authorities seized all food, ingredients and baked goods today from N2 Dough, which is known as Plantation Pride Foods.

Several inspections of this facility, including one last month, found live and dead rodents, insect infested raw ingredients and mold and mildew on the walls and ceilings.

Apparently, the owner neglected to clean up these unsanitary conditions after previous inspections by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, according to court documents.

Plantation Pride sells its bread products to some local restaurants, though it's unclear how many.

In case you're wondering where this company is located, it sits behind Bastians Bar BQ on Apperson Drive.

Check out my story in tomorrow's newspaper for more details.

  1. I didn't know what the place was when I use to stop at Bastian's. but from what I saw of the outside I thought it was a garage or something with the run down building and the vans parked out side that looked like junk. Thought that was one nasty looking place and it has been a few years since I have seen it.

Bastian's moved back down the street a stones throw away into their catering location . Haven't eaten there since. The food wasn't very good the last few time I was there. Last I saw the larger location it was up for sale.

  2. I don't understand why they were allowed to continue operating after the first inspection?

  3. Wait till you see who they made all the bread and sub rolls for . You will have a real shock then. I will not say who but I do know as I worked there years ago and I am sure they kept the same clientele. Oh and those nice little tea biscuits well all I can say is good luck.

  5. All milled grain has insect larvae in it. As far as the mice problem goes, there were less there than in the city market building, by far.

  6. There may be less than there was in the City Market building, by far, the point is, The City Market took care of it and attempted to do so when the problem was made known. This company point blank did not care and decided to keep making money instead of following the legal law as well as the moral one. It is the attitude behind it that bothers me. If they jumped on this as soon as possible, we would never have been made aware of it. The problem is, it costs alot of money to do the right thing and they chose not to and pocket the money. Their actions are inexcusable under any circumstances.

  7. Obviously you have never known anyone who worked at the old Kroger Bakery downtown.
