Food Lion's new Daleville store
I have some details about Food Lion's new store planned for Daleville. This grocer will open in mid to late August at Orchard Marketplace, a retail center on U.S. 220. Food Lion told me recently that the 35,000-square-foot store will be a new prototype for the company.
It's not a Bloom store, which is one of Food Lion's upscale concepts. But the new grocery store will section off certain departments into "neighborhoods," with an overall updated store design. It's one of 50 prototype Food Lion stores so far.
To the left is a picture of Food Lion's new prototype meat department, courtesy of the grocer. All of the chain's new stores will be designed with this updated look.
Check out my story in tomorrow's Business section for more details about the retailers and businesses coming to Orchard Marketplace.

They need to update their stores. I don't go to Food Lion because the stores just seem so low rent to me. They just don't appeal to me.

I'm not sure why they don't just go all the way and make it a Bloom. Like Debbie, I have a pretty low opinion of the "Food Lion" brand. If you want to go the most economical route, Wal-Mart is usually much nicer than Food Lion.

I agree with Debbie. The Food Lions I have been around North County seem a little "run down" to me as well.

I hope this will be a model store for other Food Lions in our region. Our children have been calling these stores "Food Dirt" for a long time given their appearance. Althougth I have found the store at Oak Grove to be well kept and the staff courteous, the one on Plantation road in North County is a different story. We recently had to manuever our shopping cart around a bag of spilled raw chicken wings on the floor there.
Also, they have the nicest cashier ever at the one at Oak Grove. Gary is his name. Very nice guy.

I like upscale items, but I was buying and wasting so much because I don't have time to do a lot of fancy cooking. I've scaled back my shopping and only go to Kroger on special occasions. I go to the Food Lion in Vinton, mainly because it's easy to get in and out. But they definitely have nicer cashiers and baggers than any other store I've been to.

Well obviously all of you haven't been spending enough time at Ukrops

35,000 sq ft is the perfect size for a store in this location. Food Lion has a very flexible store footprint when it comes to design. I look forward to visiting this new store.

The one on Riverland Rd was remodeled earlier this year, it looks very nice compared to what it used to be like. It took me a few visits to be able to find everything, but it's getting better with each visit. The Tanglewood location is nice, too.

Sorry, it's not Riverland, it's Bennington.

The Food Lion on Wildwood Rd. in W. Salem is nice. The employees are friendly and helpful as well. I don't go there that often, they do have a couple of things that I can only get at Food Lion, and they are the closest grocery store to my house and it's easy in and easy out. So that gets them some of my business.
