Success of $1 movie rentals

If you thought renting DVDs was becoming an archaic method of watching movies, pay attention to Redbox's many DVD kiosks throughout the Roanoke Valley and nationwide.

Apparently, this company that charges a $1 a day rental fee for the latest blockbuster movies is growing rapidly, landing its easy-to-spot red kiosks in more grocery stores, Wal-Marts and 7-Eleven locations. In the Roanoke Valley, you'll find Redbox kiosks in some Walgreens and Wal-Mart stores.

Check out this story about Redbox's success.

  1. RedBox and MovieCube are great. Who wants to put up with $5 movies and some rude, over-pierced clerk in a SlipKnot t-shirt anyway?

  2. I like using RedBox to rent movies. It is so easy and convenient. The good thing is if you finish the movie in 1 night you can return it and only pay $1. It costs only $1 each day thereafter. Great concept!

  3. I may opt to use these places for some new releases. I love Netflix and use them for a lot of TV series and older movies that Blockbuster or Hollywood/Movie Gallery no longer stock. I still use the local rental stores for the moment, but if more of these boxes show up and they are close enough, I may opt for them instead.

  4. We rent movies from the machine at our Kroger store on a somewhat regular basis. I think it's a great deal and it's very easy to use. Just don't forget to return it for several days like I did.

  5. We use the Redbox at the Bonsack WalMart on a regular basis. Very handy to grab on our way out after picking up groceries. Can't beat the $1 price and every once in a awhile they email us a coupon for a free rental.

  6. This is a great and inexpensive way to rent old and new release movies, not to mention the convenience and not having the hassle of a typical movie rental store. I told my son and his roommates about it at college and they now go regularly, which saves them (and me) a great deal of money! Plus they send them weekly e-mails about new releases.

  7. Two words... Netflix rocks... and your helping a local business, because they have a distribution center in Roanoke.
