Top online shopping sites
The national recession may have forced us to spend less, but we're still shopping. And a recent survey by Stores Magazine and BIGresearch, ranking consumers' favorite online retailers, seems to prove this point. Many of the retailers who made this list last year are back, landing in roughly the same positions.
Amazon.com was No. 1, WalMart.com No. 2, and eBay.com No. 3.
But looking closely, a newcomer on this list is a reflection of thrifty times. It's Craigslist, which made the #25 spot. Craigslist is an online sales community of mostly used and cheap items, from furniture to apparel. Its debut shows that more than ever, price and savings count for many people.

Below are the top 10 online retailers, based on the survey. Read the full top 50 list here.

Hi Jenny, it's actually craigslist.org, not .com. Just thought I would let you know!

Thanks for the heads up, Julie. I just corrected the link in the post.

I don't really buy anything online, unless there's a way for me to check it out in person. Otherwise, I avoid it so I don't wind up buying a box of rocks when I should be getting a DVD player...or something. I have bought 2 cars on Craigslist, and sold one there too. I have also sold some furniture and electronics over Craigslist, and given away a whole heck of a lot via Freecycle like some old mowers, grills, clothes, and furniture. I've also scored some good stuff on Freecycle like a washer and dryer and some firewood, plus some other items. The last time I bought something online was a chair mat for a computer desk chair, because Staples didn't sell that particular type in the store, but I needed it. They had it delivered and ready for pick-up at the store 2 days later.

With the internet people have to learn to think about business another way. Tell the truth about everything and you will succeed. They will not be able to control the social media, what they have to do is be part of it as simple as that.

I'm surprised Zappos.com isn't on the top 10. Its definitely one of my top 10's. The selection is great and usually I get my order the following day. Some of the prices are higher than I'd like but there are a lot of designer brands as well as lower-priced items. SHOES BABY SHOES!!!

I buy almost everything on amazon.com - things are cheaper than in the stores and I get free two-day shipping on most items.

This looks like the usual suspects, although I agree that it's surprising that Zappo's isn't on here. If you want the ability to compare prices on products from these and other top retailers online, you need to use a price comparison website such as Sortprice (http://www.sortprice.com). It saves you a lot of time (and money!). Great list though.

Word to the wise. I am a long-time online shopper using sites regularly from itunes to barnes and noble
to hermes, steven alan, jcrew and many, many more. Digital shopping has been something very familiar
to me and I've never felt the least bit hesitant about using online retail portals...until recently.
Within the past eight weeks, two of my credit cards have been hit with security fraud following purchases
online. First, American Express called to notify me my card had been breached. AMEX was great about helping,
canceling the old card and send a new card, and not holding me responsible for those charges. This week, on
Monday, it was a call from MasterCard. The same thing happened. So while it is easier, and sometimes less
expensive, there is no guarantee about 100% online security.

That is a good point, Love. There is always a risk with security.
One thing I like about online purchasing is that you can often read other customer's reviews of the product. This is very helpful to me, because when you are in a store you only have the word of a "sales" person to go on with whether or not it will work.
