Weiner Stand building sold

The former spot of a Roanoke hot dog stand has changed hands, but the fate of this building remains unclear.

The Roanoke Weiner Stand's Brandon Avenue restaurant closed in May, but last month, Donald W. Bandy purchased this bright blue roofed building for $250,000, according to city property records.

Here's my blog post in May about the hot dog stand's closing.

Gus Pappas owns the Weiner Stand, which has a location at 3601 Brandon Ave. and on Campbell Avenue in downtown Roanoke. Pappas' nephew, Gus Chacknes, runs the hot dog stand's historic downtown shop, which dates to 1916.

I have not been able to reach the new owner of the Weiner Stand building. I'll keep you updated once I find out more news.

In the meantime, what would you like to see happen at this former hot dog stand? Should it reopen as the Roanoke Weiner Stand or another business?

  1. Another business is probably the right decision. I have been a customer of the Roanoke Weiner Stand for as long as I can remember. Mainly at the downtown venue and occasionally on Brandon, but both places have left with the feeling that something is different. I can't be sure but they've changed brands of meat or something doesn't seem the same,............or the aging process is just catching up with me :)

  6. Weiner Stand! It's much closer to where I live than the downtown store and I can go more often! Still the best hot dog I've ever had!

  8. Maybe I've missed this in past columns, but what is being built at the corner of Colonial & Brambleton?

  9. Becky,
A Bojangles fast food restaurant is going up at this corner. I'll check with the owner to find out his timetable for opening.

  10. Bring back the Weiner Stand. In fact I wish they would open about a dozen more. Parking is such a pain in downtown and the one on Brandon was so nice with the drive-thru. Anyone who says they don't want it back in that location (or in any other location) is not American!! They probably hate baseball and apple pie as well!!

  11. We are shooting for October 12 to reopen the Brambleton store.
