MidKnight Madness to be held at Cave Spring on Nov. 14

Introducing winter sports at Cave Spring High School... MidKnight Madness will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the main gym at Cave Spring High School.

The winter sports teams that will be featured include Boys Varsity & JV Basketball, Girls Varsity & JV Basketball, Wresting, Boys & Girls Swimming, Wrestling, Boys & Girls Mixed Indoor Track, Cheerleaders are also still working hard during the winter for Basketball.

But the event will benefit the Roanoke McDonald House and the RAM House, and the community is asked to bring one canned food item and $3 at the door.

"It all started as a community charity event. It started as a way to help the sports teams help the community," said Sandy Furrow, coordinator of the event. "We want all of our sports teams to be recognized. We keep it going for the community aspect of it."

A contest at 7 p.m. for the younger kids will be available including games such as, Knock Out, Three point basketball contests, skits, miniature basketball games, things thrown in the crowd and of course lots of music! Drawings and prizes will also be given out.

To include more students at the high school, they've included the pep band, cheerleaders, competition cheerleaders, dance team, skits by students, shortened game with the seniors vs faculty, etc.

"It's a very exciting evening. It gets the kids pumped up about the season," Furrow said.

The Girlss and Boys' basketball teams host the event in a joint effort. The boy's team does all the volunteering and organizing and the girls' team gets together all the food, Furrow said.

Becky Mackey, the varsity Team Mom said, "We charge $3.00 a person and ask them to bring a can of food. The boys' basketball team takes the canned food to the RAM House, and the money is donated to a charity selected by the boys' and girls' teams. We have been contributing the boys' part to the Ronald McDonald House, and the girls contribute theirs to a scholarship fund."

Mid Knight Madness was started 15 years ago when Coach Billy Hicks was the assistant coach and Chris Carr was head coach, in an effort to get the school pumped up about the basketball season. The coaches met with a few parents and brainstormed the idea for Mid Knight Madness.

"It has always been something the students and community enjoy. CS was the 1st high school in VA to conduct a MKM, and we even coined the term MidKnight (with a K) Madness," Coach Hicks said.

"The last few years, we've tried to include the community more rather than just the high school," Mackey said. "In addition to the high school JV & v boys & girls basketball teams, we've included the middle school (girls, boys teams and cheerleaders). We try to include all the elementary feeder schools to get them excited about being a future knight."
