Green Valley Elementary School celebrates Veteran

Green Valley Elementary School students and faculty invited the community and all veterans to celebrate Veterans' Day on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 8:30 a.m. Their annual program, held for the last 18 years every Veterans' Day proved to be another successful event and completely packed the school's cafeteria.

Not only did many Veterans' attend, but school board officials, members of the Board of Supervisors, and community members filled the cafeteria and lined the hallway.

The program featured two Veteran speakers, Ken Pearson and Bobby Ferguson. Also present were members from the Veterans Outreach Program, American Legion Post 3, and Military Order of the Purple Heart.

A Welcome Message was given by Principal Tammy Newcomb and the Statement of Purpose was read by SCA President, Stephanie Pekic.
Also included in the program will be a special reading by Camilla Cabaniss, retired 3rd grade teacher, and additional patriotic music performed by the students and directed by Mary Lou Hagen, music teacher.

Those that fought in various wars were asked to stand and be recognized. They were asked to stand again as the each grade level participated in the event by singing "God Bless America", the Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, and Coast Guard songs to honor the Veteran's in attendance.

Colors were presented by the Roanoke Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association, as they have done for many years.

Green Valley also put together a wall of thanks, including the student's and faculty's family members that are Veteran's.

The Green Valley PTA offered refreshments following the program in the front hallway and parents and Veteran's were encouraged to stay and visit their child's classroom between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. A breakfast for the Veteran's was held earlier that morning at 7:45 a.m.
