Marlins dominate H2Okie Thanksgiving Invite

Carter Center Aquatics of Roanoke rolled out of Blacksburg last week with over 60 first place finishes to take 2nd place at the H2Okie Aquatics Thanksgiving Invitational swimming meet on the campus of Virginia Tech November 12-14.

Kali Edsall, 12, won all 9 of her events, set a new meet record and was the top scorer for the Marlins.  Olivia Stanley won 7 out of 9 events and Kelsey Holmgaard won 5 out of 6 events in nearly all life-best times.  Sal Russo won 5 out of 7 events and set a new meet record in the 13-14 boys 200-yard backstroke in a best time of 2 minutes .48 seconds.  His younger brother Angelo, 9, won 4 individual events and set 3 new meet records (200-yd free, 50-yd fly and 100-yd IM).

“We were the dominant team throughout the meet,” said Head Coach Greg Johnson.  “Our youngest swimmers up to our oldest swimmers performed beyond expectations.”

Although the Marlins won the majority of the events and filled in with many second and third place finishes, the hosts, H2Okie Aquatics team of Blacksburg, won the meet through depth and numbers, especially throughout the younger age groups.

“We couldn’t keep up with their numbers,” said Eva Steib, who has served as the Age Group coach with the Marlins for eleven years.  “They had so many younger swimmers who placed through the 16th spot.”

Other event winners for the Marlins were Kacy Edsall, Kyle Ewoldt, Christina McLemore, Katherine Moles, Lucas Otruba, Kylie Patrick, Maddie Robinson, Dominic Russo and Virginia Thornhill.

The Marlins will be in Fairfax, Va for the Sport Fair Winter Classic Invitational December 11-14 for the last swim meet of 2008.
