Does Southwest Roanoke County shop at Ukrop's?

You've likely seen the story earlier this week about how the Ukrop's grocery store in Roanoke is losing money, a lot more than expected.

Food writer Lindsey Nair wondered what her readers had to say about the matter, and she's gotten lots over comment over on her Fridge Magnet food blog, if you'd like to check those out.

So what do you think -- either about Ukrop's, or grocery shopping options in Southwest Roanoke County altogether? You can leave a comment below here, as well.

  1. I love Ukrops but living in Southwest County, it is not convenient for me to shop there. I would love to see Ukrops relocate to Southwest County.

  3. I was so excited about Ucrops coming to Roanoke as I had shopped in the Richmond stores. This store does not meet the same standards that I experienced in the Richmond stores. For example: I went in the store one Friday to get their famous peeled shrimp and they did not have any. Some items did not seem to be as fresh as I remembered in the Richmond stores too. I also saw empty shelves and things reduced.I never saw that in Richmond.I think they must ship a lot of things in from the Capitol and Roanoke is a long way from there. Let's face it, Ucrops is a specialty store. Most people could not afford to buy everyday groceries from Ucrops. In addition Fresh Market is very close by and has more as specialty stores go. And we can't forget the new Kroger store in Bonsack. I think competition and some store problems have put Ucrops in a poor position. Add to that a bad economy and bad location and Ucrops should have some answers.

  4. It is simply 'too far'(not necessarily distancs, but time) out of the way for me as a SW county shopper. There is nothing really different about the experience that would draw me away from the Local Food Lion or Kroger and when I need that different food item, I hit the Fresh market at Towers.
