Photos of Southwest Roanoke County people at Army-Navy game

And you thought Cave Spring vs. Hidden Valley was big! Just try the annual Army-Navy football game.

Annette Lawrence of Southwest Roanoke County took this photo of her son, Fleet Lawrence, a second class midshipman at Navy, with Chuck Salderini, a 1963 Navy grad who now lives in Southwest Roanoke County.

By the way, Salderini played quarterback for Navy -- behind Roger Staubach, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy and later play in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys.

This the 109th meeting between Army and Navy, and the Lawrence family sends us a photo gallery from the action, along with this report:

"Navy won 34-0 winning for the seventh year in a row.

But the game is about more than simply the score. It is about representing your branch of the service, bragging rights, and soldiers and seamen who will serve together for our country in battle. Some of the star athletes will be in Iraq and Afghanistan in 6-7 months. Many will go on to become SEALS, pilots, Sub commanders, Destroyer and Carrier Captains, Etc.

President Bush was at the game shaking hands and getting some love from the military folks . . . sitting on the Army side for the first half and then coming to his senses for the second half."

  1. Nice article, SWoCo! Good to see Army/Navy getting some love from the folks back home. My dad Quigg is right, it's about more than the outcome. Sure, we are feuding rivals during the game...but at the end of the day, we are brothers in arms, fighting for America's freedom. The football and all the hoopla is great (especially when Navy wins!) but the most important part is keeping those brave men and women working around the clock (including Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's) and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Please remember those soldiers/sailors/Marines/airmen, who are marching patrols in Iraq, hunting terrorists in Afghanistan, operating nuclear reactors....basically doing whatever is needed of them.

    Thanks for reading...and GO NAVY!
