Marlins heat up the pool at Winter Classic
Sparked by a tremendous final session Sunday night, Carter Center Aquatics (CCA) took a second place for the men and a combined team seventh place finish at the Sport Fair Winter Classic swimming meet in Fairfax December 11-14.
Kali Edsall, 12, and Kyle Ewoldt, 12, both high-point award recipients for their age group, won four events each and Edsall went on to set two new meet records in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.
“I was so excited to see those two have the meet they did,” said Eva Steib, the duo’s primary coach and the lead coach for the Marlins strong 12-and-under program. “Kali will do anything she puts her mind to and Kyle found the determination to accomplish what he did.”
Besides the two 12-year olds, numerous Marlins went on to score top-3 finishes. Brothers Salvatore and Angelo Russo won two and three events, respectively. Other Marlins included Grace Aheron, Kacy Edsall, Kelsey Holmgaard, Trey Lowe III, Lucas Otruba and Alex Vance.
Coach Greg Johnson said, “This was a great meet for our team. The kids swam their best and many have set new standards for themselves in their swimming. I can’t wait for the next one.”
The team will travel by bus to Atlanta, GA over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday for another invitation-only swimming meet. In the meantime, the Marlins will be training hard over the holidays.
