1st year wrestler Nate Goad gets a reverse on a Franklin County opponent

Hidden Valley Youth Wrestling divided its time between both sides of Virginia on January 3, 2009. One group headed for Franklin County while the other group was waking in Hampton, VA.

Pee-wee Division: K-5 th grade:

Allen Young participated in the 76 to 81-weight class division. His first match went into 4 OT and then sudden death before he came out victorious. His other matches also were close but Allen hung in their winning 3-2 and the his greatest margin came with a 4-1 decision over a Halifax Wrestling Club member to earn him another gold medal.

Logan Puckett (first year wrestler) picked up his first gold of the season but he had to go through teammate Noah Bushman, and 2 wrestlers from the Halifax Co. Youth team in order to accomplish this.

John Alouf took gold.

Zachary Early (first year wrestler) wrestled in the 54-60-weight class to bring home a silver medal. Zach pinned a Smith Mountain Lake opponent, and then won by technical decision on points (15-0) over a Franklin County grappler. His only defeat was to a powerful Roanoke Gladiators wrestler.

Cole Cowher (1st year wrestler) finished in 2nd place while Wesley Steinspring (1st year wrestler) in his first tournament finished in 2nd place.

Nick Brabham wrestled in the Pee-Wee Division, 58 lb. weight class and placed 2nd. He won his first match over a Liberty Christian opponent by points but lost his second to a Franklin County wrestler.

Nate Goad (1st year wrestler) in his first tournament lost his first two matches before finding a rhythm winning by decision 12-0 over a Halifax opponent to finish 3rd . Nate did say after his first victory on the season "boy that felt good to have my hand raised up"

Nicholas McGuire wrestled 62-68 weight class division. In his first of the day Nick was winning 10-8 with 15 seconds to go in the 3rd period when his balance betrayed him and got turned and lost points on reversal and near fall back points. Nick would rally in the next match to win 6-0 over another opponent and then he would win by pin over a Smith Mountain Lake wrestler, but his later match was to much and he lost on points to a Franklin County opponent and finished with a Bronze medal on the day.

Cody Shelton also received 3rd while Carter Glenn finished in 4th place.

Josh Neighbors wrestled in 62-66 weight class division and had 4 hard fought matches with opponents from Franklin Co., Hidden Valley, Perry McClure, and Smith Mountain Lake Wrestling Club. He had 2 wins and 2 losses to finish 4th in his weight class.

Ross O'Bryan wrestled in the 78-84 lb weight class division. He won his first match with a win over a Halifax opponent in a come from behind victory. Halifax was up 2-0 with a couple of quick escapes, but Ross countered by gaining points using 2 reversals (for 4 points) by moving using quick sit outs, a mule kick and a front trip to earn points and control his opponent in a 7-3 victory. He would later drop a close 3-2 decision and a double overtime decision to finish in 3rd place.

Junior Division: 6- 8th grade

Justin McGuire placed 4th in the 93-100 weight division

2009 Virginia Challenge Middle School and Elementary State Championships

Hidden Valley Youth Wrestler were represented at this year at the 2009 Virginia Challenge Middle School and Elementary State Championships January 2-4, 2009 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA.

3rd - 5th grade Division

Lee Pritchard wrestled in the 90 lb weight class division. Lee won his first two marches by pin but lost his last two matches in a close contest 4-2 to a Botetourt Wrestling Club and a 2-0 loss to Christainsburg to put him in 3rd place.

Ryan Eubank got 3rd in the 85lb weight class division. He started with a loss to eventual state champion from Poquoson. After that he came back with 3 quick victories over opponents from Williamsburg, Staunton River, and in the third place match against Fauquier. All 3 victories were by pin.

First year wrestlers Kale Doolan and Kiel Cool took on the challenge this year to attend the 2009 Virginia Challenge Elementary State Championships Kiel placed 5th and Kale finished 7th.

Middle School Division 6- 8th grade

Former HVYSA Wrestlers Chase McDaniel 3 rd place, Creed Lumpp got 3rd place, Gabe Lumpp and Jake Kite finished in 6th place while Coty Love finished 8th.
