The Amazing County Treasure Hunt…Caching in on Scenery on Saturday, May 16

This free state of the art Geocaching event is a treasure hunt and an amazing race all tied into one. On Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 12 noon to 5 PM at Roanoke County’s Garst Mill Park at 2599 Willowlawn Street, Roanoke VA 24018 the fun begins. Using a hand-held GPS, longitudes and latitudes, a well thought out game plan and pure tenacity will get you to all ten scenic and /or historic sites within Roanoke County. At each site there will be one box/cache for individuals/families and another box/cache for student teams. Inside each cache lies your “treasure”. There will be one gold colored coin valued at 10 points, one silver colored coin at 5 points and 10 bronze colored coins with a value of 1 point in each. The object will be to accumulate as many points as possible taking only one coin from each location. You may compete as an individual, family or in student teams. School teams are made up of four students and a teacher, all other teams no restrictions on numbers. Preregistration for school teams is requested by May 5th.

Not sure “how to” operate a Global Positioning System device? No problem; an instructional class will begin at 11:00 AM. A limited number of GPS units will be available to those who do not bring their own. A $150 deposit will be required for their use. Deposits can be either a personal check or cash. The deposit will be returned upon the safe return of the GPS unit. Pre-register to ensure your spot or arrive beginning at 10AM to register on the day of the event.

The mission, should you decide to accept is to be the first individual, family or team to return with the most accumulated points. Prizes will be awarded but a “fun-tastic” time will be your ultimate reward as you take in the beautiful Roanoke County scenery and breathe taking views in the great outdoors. The Amazing Treasure Hunt is an event of Roanoke County Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism with support from the Roanoke Star Sentinel and Bella Magazine.
