Three golfers from Southwest Roanoke County have qualified for the fourth seed in match play at the 19th Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Roanoke Country Club.

They are Jack Wilkes from Cave Spring High School, Brad Elder from Hidden Valley High School and Alex Taylor from Hidden Valley High School.

Following today’s second round of stroke play qualifying, 16 qualifiers advanced to the opening round of match play on Thursday. The quarterfinals will also take place on Thursday followed by the semifinals and scheduled 18-hole final on Friday, June 19.

Here's the full release, and scores, from the Virginia State Golf Association:

ROANOKE –– Matthew Ball Jr., 17, of Richmond earned medalist honors as stroke play qualifying concluded today at the 19th Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Roanoke Country Club.

Due to heavy rainfall at the course, competitors played only a nine-hole stipulated round on the club’s par 35 inward nine to complete the second round of stroke play qualifying.

Ball, a quarterfinalist at the ’08 championship, finished stroke play qualifying a 2-under 104 (72-32) to earn the top seed for match play, which begins on Thursday. Ball’s younger brother Adam Ball, 15, of Richmond also finished qualifying with a 104 aggregate and earned the second seed.

Two-time defending champion Michael Moyers, 18, of Stanardsville, local golfer and ’08 Junior Match Play finalist Jack Wilkes, 17, of Roanoke and Michael Swope, 17, of Richmond, a quarterfinalist in ’06, completed seed Nos. 3-5, respectively.

At the conclusion of stroke play qualifying, 10 players at 5-over-par 111 qualified for nine spots in the 16-player match play field. The top-seeded Ball will face local Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke), who was the last player to get in the match play field, qualifying on the eighth extra hole.

The opening round of match play and the quarterfinals take place on Thursday followed by the semifinals and scheduled 18-hole final on Friday, June 19.
