North Cross Middle School students raise funds for service dog
After hearing about a service dog named Finn who helps wounded soldiers at a Marine base in Hawaii, on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 60 middle school students in Heather Lawrence's history classes made a decision.
The group of students decided then and there that they wanted to help provide the men who were caring for the yellow Labrador Retriever with funds to help support him. And, with the help of a few other students not in Lawrence's class (who heard the story and decided they wanted to help as well), the group collected about $300 in just a few short days.
The money, along with handwritten letters and thank-you cards, were sent to the unit in Kaneohe Bay Hawaii. The money will be used to provide support for Finn's basic needs: food, toys, bedding. A highly trained service dog, Finn's job in the Wounded Warrior barracks, where wounded soldiers are stationed to recuperate, is to bring a touch of home and a sense of calm to a sometimes alien or depressing situation.
