Building Peace in the Body of Christ event to be held at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren

The Virlina District Prayer Committee wants to invite you to the 2nd annual Building Peace in the Body of Christ worship service to be held at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren on Sunday, September 20 at 3 p.m. Oak Grove Church of the Brethren is located at 2138 McVitty Road.

This even comes the day before the International Day of Prayer for Peace which is on Monday, September 21 this year. The object of the International Day of Prayer for Peace is to encourage worldwide, 24-hour spiritual observation for peace and non-violence. The worship service is to commemorate that day.

"We look at ways to promote peace in the district," said George Barnhart, Chairman of Virlina District Prayer Committee. "It is a worship service with peace as the emphasis."

This will be the second year of the event. Last year's event was held at Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren and the service was a series of prayer. About 50 to 60 people came out for the event from all over Virginia.

"I envision every year being a little different," Barnhart said."The speakers reflect a diversity in our district. We also selected a choir from first Church which has a biracial makeup, They'll do special music, gospel."

"We feel like we've had this past adversarial situation. Peace is so much prouder than how you react to the military or war- it includes people and health care. We are desperately trying to move past protesting the war or military protest."

Speakers for the Peace in the Body of Christ event will included J. Michael Varner, Pastor of Topeco Church of Brethren and Timothy P. Harvey, Pastor of Central Church of the Brethren.

"Our church does a lot with the local elementary schools in the city and has expanded to involved other organizations in seven schools," Pastor Harvey said. "We've learned some of the things it takes to promote peace. We've found a lot of children who are in poverty and hungry. I'll be preaching on John 5 when Jesus meets an invalid and asks him if he wants to be made well.

"I feel that peace has a lot to do with the whole person- that's my focus as speaker," Harvey said.

"I would hope that as a Christian community, people would come with a renewed sense of what their discipleship means and what peace means in their personal life, with their families, children and their work," Barnhart said.

"I hope people will first think more broadly about their involvement in the community and do something about it. I hope people say its not just enough to come and sing in church but I hope they'll feel motivated to make a difference," Harvey said.

Barnhart said that all are welcome to the Peace in the Body of Christ event at Oak Grove and that it should last about an hour. with three different groups of special music, hopefully to include, gospel from First Church, a duet by Paul and Karen Stutzman, Bluegrass gospel from Topeco Church of the Brethren in Floyd, and special music done by children.

Refreshments and fellowship will follow the service.

Swing Dance brings fun and fellowship to the community

Want to learn to swing dance? That's exactly how Swing Roanoke at St. John Lutheran Church got started. According to Bob Carroll, one of the swing dance instructors, Mike Gordan and Robert Williams started the class after wanting to learn to swing dance in 2000

The class was originally held at Church of the Holy Spirit for about eight years, before it grew and moved to St. John Lutheran Church at 4608 Brambleton Avenue.

"This was created for single people, or adults who wanted to have fun and be with other people," Carroll said, who has been in the class since the beginning.

Over the years, Carroll said they have averaged about 20 people per class. The classes are held every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. and another class at 7:30 p.m. and is run completely by volunteers.

"The teachers are people who like to dance and are knowledgeable about Swing," Carroll said.

The teachers include Carroll himself, Alice Inouye, Bryon Lewis, and Diane Brown.

Anyone can join in the fun, in fact Carroll says you don't have to even know how to dance. The class costs $5 or $2 for students. The money is used to pay for dances that Swing Roanoke holds on occasion and subsidizes workshops. Carroll said they often bring in professional dancers to teach and money is also used for the sound speakers and music used during lessons.

No commitment must be made, just come and check it out and if you enjoy it they would love to have you back, if not, well that's fine too.

"It's more informal in that. We have some who do it faithfully and some who don't."

Carroll said that you don't even have to have a partner if you want to participate because they rotate partners constantly.

This event is sponsored by Adult Ministries and Singles Ministries.

"It's fun. There is great music, dancing with a partner is fun. You get to learn steps and teaching helps you become a better dancer."

Carroll said that after the class many of the participants head to Corned Beef to get even more dancing practice in.

"It's good movement and a good workout," Carroll said.

The Graves family welcomes CW3 Charles Graves home from Iraq

When Charles Graves was only 18-years-old he decided to join the Air Force and serve his country. At age 20 he transferred to the Army where he became a Black Hawk Pilot. He served one year in Korea and three years in Germany.

A turn of events in 1999 nearly changed his life forever at least he thought.

While stationed in Germany, Charles was deployed to Kosovo and watched as some of his fellow soldiers and dear friends in the helicopter in front of him crashed and caught on fire.

"One of the pilots had five children. He had to try and rescue the pilots, but it was too late," Grave's wife, Lisa Graves said. "It was that incident that caused him to reconsider his military career. From that point, every time he cranked his helicopter he wondered if he would return to his family." Read more »
