America shocks: Brooke White gets boot

What?? Brooke goes home?? Where does that leave this show? I hope with DC… but geez … who’s to say?

Wendy, wherever you are – please don’t give up blogging with for us when you return. I know you are big fan.

Other notes from the show:

Idol just gets weirder and weirder.

Ryan began with the elephant in the room - Paula.

What's your next "ex" prediction?

Okay, so I am not a big Neil Diamond fan.

Well, this week can definitely be chalked up to a big learning experience in my books – especially when it comes to Neil Diamond. I mean besides my parents and my husband (who still watches "Matlock" reruns and listens to Squeeze), I didn’t know anyone who even knew one of Neil Diamond’s songs.

Fellow readers wrote in passionately about Neil’s vast library of songs and America’s love for him. I found the first to be true, but the latter … well … I am still not convinced.

Paula Abdul looks into the future ... by accident

Oops! I forgot to mention Paula! How could I forget?

What did you all think about her thinking Jason sang two songs? Ryan had to think fast and I think DC (he was next in line to be critiqued) was even embarrassed for her. Simon was smirking a little though.

What was she thinking? WAS she thinking? You gotta LOVE live television…

Forget Jason Castro, bravo David Cook

Jason
1. “Forever in Blue Jeans” – this song and Neil Diamond songs, in general match well with Jason but still… it just kinda lay there.
2. “September Morn” – Again… the same.
Overall, FORGETTABLE. The judges did their best to send him packing – talked about his strength the last two weeks. Two weeks? I never really liked Jason.

It’s simple. Jason is the weakest singer and performer. He should go home this week – no question.

DC
1. “I’m Alive” – nice rocker style (as usual).
2. “All I Really Need is You” – went a little sweeter with a rock out in the end.
The judges congratulated DC on his ability to take 2 unheard-of songs and bring them into today’s rock genre.

Will DC bring AI into the 21st century?

Get with the times, Idol

First, let me start by saying – I am so excited to guest blog this week. I mean, I HAVE to watch TV. I promised Wendy I would. Pinch me ‘cause I must be dreaming.

Second, my friends on the "Today Show" spoke of "American Idol" and my ears naturally perked up. Apparently, ratings have dropped significantly and especially in the demographic of young women (ages 18-34). What could have possibly contributed to this decline in ratings?

The answer – song choice.

Where's Wendy? Don't worry, you're in good hands

Hey readers,

If all went according to plan, I should be in Switzerland right now. It was time for a vacation. Even in the middle of the "American Idol" season. But, never fear. The blog is covered. This week, avid blog reader Amy Hanek is going to take over my role and contribute her thoughts on the show. So, look for her comments this week, and as always, post your own. Next week (I'll be back May 12), Nona Nelson of The Happy Wag, our pets blog, will man the ship. Amy and Nona watch "Idol" as much as the rest of us, so the blog will be in good hands.

This season could turn even Brooke White into a cynic

Here's my latest column on "Idol" happenings. Enjoy!

I'm still sad about Carly's departure.

Carly gone? My confidence in America is way low

I've gotten too invested apparently. But I have not much to say right now. Even the folks who don't like Carly Smithson know that she's way more talented than Jason Castro. And Brooke White. And Syesha. The wind has left my sail. I'm glad I'm going to Europe for 2 weeks. More on that later. I'm sad. There went the talent.

OK, really? Carly in the bottom 2???

Jason Castro beat Carly? Really, America? Are you serious? This show is ridiculous.

Where they stand

Aside from Brooke White's major misstep (which broke my heart), I think tonight's performances were truly representative of each competitor's skill level.

Brooke: Not always consistent, but can bring you to tears when she nails it
David Archuleta: Talented voice, but never steps out of his comfort zone
David Cook: Solid every time and has incredible versatility and range
Carly Smithson: Has a very big voice, but picking the right songs is crucial
Jason Castro: A cutie and fun to listen to, but overall too weak vocally to continue
Syesha Mercado: Has a wonderful voice, but it's imperative she sings songs that mean something to her. Otherwise she's forgettable.
