Santa time at PetSmart

The hubby and I spent a few hours helping out with Santa photos at PetSmart yesterday. (That's not my hubby in the Santa suit. He would want me to note that.) The photo shoot this past weekend was run by Star City Greyhound Adoptions.

We got to meet some really sweet pups and pet parents, but no one brought any kitties for a photo op with the Jolly Old Elf. What's up with that, cat lovers?

You still have a chance to get your pet photographed with Santa. Bring your pooches and/or kitties to the Valley View or Christiansburg stores on the next two Saturdays or Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get a color print of your pet with Kris Kringle. The photos are $10.95, only $9.95 with a PetPerks discount card, and $5 goes directly to a local animal welfare group.

  1. I would love to get Cali's picture with Santa but there is no way she would sit still long enough for that to happen. I had silver garland wrapped around her yesterday and tried to get her picture but that didn't work. I think this weekend I'll have my husband try to make her sit still long enough for me to give it another shot. If it works I'll send it along!!

As for the cats, there is no way in the world that I could take them to PetSmart for a picture. Shade would get all freaked out if she saw a bunch of dogs looking at her. Gracie turns into rigormortis cat when you take her anywhere and tends to mess herself. Nobody wants a picture of that!!! I have a feeling I'm not the only one with kitties like that which is why Santa is a dog's best friend!

BTW - I'm a little late on this but I loved the feline memo. I'm afraid of what I would get if my cats wrote one to me!!

  2. I have the same problems as Kim! It's a great idea...I would absolutely love to have pictures of Holly and my cats with Santa though. I can picture what would happen unfortunately...Holly would rip Santa's beard off of his face and then go for his hat and run off thinking it was a great game, the cat's would be screaming their lungs out about being out of their house and we would all be banned from the store forever. I see pictures of everyone else's dog and cat with Santa and always wonder...what am I doing wrong!

  3. Deborah - I think those people must have unusual cats! You and I must have been blessed with the non-conformist pooches!

  4. The Santa that we had on Sunday was very patient with even the most energetic pooches, and the photographer took the time to get the very best shot of each pet. That said, I know that some pooches and kitties just ain't feeling the Santa thing, dog.

My kitty, Thai, did really well last year when we took him to Santa for a photo. Surrounded by excited dogs, he stayed cool and posed like a pro. My daughter's cat, India, however, would have clawed the face of Santa Claus and darted out the door. So needless to say, we would never take her.

Dexter lifted a leg on Santa's chair last year. Uh, can you say embarrassing?!?!

I am a firm believer in not forcing your pet to do anything that would be traumatic or upsetting. No photo is worth that. You are never doing wrong when you put your pet's comfort and safety first.

  5. It really sounds like Kim and I both have the same dog and cats! Nona, I love the pictures of your pets with Santa!! I would love a picture like that. That must have been a bit embarrassing with Dexter lifting his leg at Santa's chair...wonder how many dogs did that little trick! I know they all love to leave their mark. Holly gets so very excited and hyper over everything new, I can only imagine what would happen. My cats are both fairly old so anything different in their life would be upsetting. They sleep on my (I mean their) bed, they eat, they use the litter boxes, they check out what's going on downstairs, they go back to sleep. They never go anywhere except to the vet and getting them in the carrier to take them is always exciting with them screaming all the way! I think I'm going to use a computer Santa! Paint Shop Pro a little hat on them, put them in Santa's lap and everyone can rest easy! That way I won't be banned from PetsMart either!

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
