The Happy Wag

A kitty star is born

I knew it was a little risky running my memo to my boss, Thai the cat, in the newspaper. Yesterday's Happy Wag column was an extended version of an earlier blog entry that had been well received.

But now Thai is on a bigger stage with a wider audience of newspaper readers, and apparently it has gone to his head. He wants to get an agent. He thinks a book deal is imminent. I proposed the title "Thai and Me" to him; he countered with "Just Thai."

Sigh.

Cats are a comedic gold mine. Everything they do is funny. They start out as playful, joyful, adorable kittens to lure you in, and once they have you hooked, you are their servants.

Dogs give unconditional love; cats make you work for it. Cats are complex; they are demanding and aloof one moment and sweetly affectionate the next. I love and almost envy the feline sense of entitlement; they want what they want when they want it and it's you job to get it for them.

Cats are always in charge. They insist you do everything their way, and you are happy to comply because when they show their appreciation with a purr and a swirl around your ankles, there is almost no better feeling. Cats reward you for a job well done. Or they ignore you.

Like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

If you are in the service of a kitty, post a comment and let us know how your last performance review went. What are you doing to better serve your feline master?

  1. Love it! When does the movie come out? "Just Thai"....great name for the book and movie! I am in the service of two kitties who would probably give me negative reviews at this point. Last I saw them, they were sound asleep on my bed in their respective places...I woke them up trying to get to my pocketbook and got very dirty looks from both of them.

  3. The state of my performance review would depend on what day it was given! I'd like to think that I would generally get a good review. Shade and I have our mandatory cuddle-time every night(when she's ready of course)while we watch TV. I usually remember to turn on the faucet for the nightly bedtime drink without having to be told. This morning, Gracie was not pleased with my delay in filling up the sink with water for her morning drink and she told me about it. Nevermind that they have perfectly good, fresh water in their bowl - it has to be sink water!! If I were to get any negatives on my review, it would most likely come from letting the dog in the house. I have a feeling that I get serious deductions every evening for that one!

  4. What a handsome Thai. He looks so much like my black and white tuxedo, Lily. Well, used to be my Lily. She went to stay with my Mom last May when I went on vacation, & she decided to stay! She just lives across town, so I get to see her. When I visit she remembers to greet me with hisses, nibbles, & claws like when we used to play 'tussle'. I do have a resident yellow striped tom (Tiger). He has no front claws, so he gently kneads my lap & purrs loudly as we lounge in the recliner watching the news and Mayberry.

  5. I'd get a good performance review. I let them both up on the bed even though their dad says no. But in the middle of the night, when I find that the cats actually have more space and more covers than me, I shove them off and probably lose a few points. Nothing that can't be repaired with a little 9 Lives the next day.
