More recalls for doggie snacks

Click here and herefor more doggie treat recalls. Choosy pet parents may want to skip peanut butter flavored snacks for a while and just sub in some other type of goodies. I am not sure if any of these treats were sold in Southwestern Virginia, but my Google analytics tell me there are folks all over the country who peek in on this blog, so check it out if you are concerned.

If your pooch is a PB addict, jars of peanut butter are still OK, so you could bake your own cookies. I'll post recipes tomorrow.

I roasted some butternut squash a while back and while the humans in my house weren't that crazy about it (it needed salt, I think), the four-leggers LOVED it.  Their other happy snack is blueberries, but those are awfully pricey right now.  So is butternut squash, actually.

And to be honest, we have yet to find anything that Stormy won't eat. Besides the aforementioned squash and berries, he really loves bananas and clementines.

And socks. He's a sock-snacking gourmet. He can rifle through a whole basket of laundry and come out with all the socks. But that's not really food. And we keep reminding him of that.

What kind of snacks makes your doggie sit up and beg? And does your dog make good calls on what's edible and what is not?

  1. Regular MilkBone treats with a peanut butter smear on top is the #1 bedtime treat for Miss Molly. She can get upstairs and on the bed before I can fix it and get upstairs with it!!!

  2. One of my aunt's used to have a dog named George who was extremely jealous of a neighbors dog. When George wouldn't eat his food, she'd tell him, I'm going to give it to Blackie and rather than have it given away, he'd eat it. The exception being Morningstar Farms fake bacon, when it first came out in the 70's. I was visiting and my aunt cooked some. We didn't like it, so she gave it to George. He wouldn't eat it either. She threatened to give it to Blackie, and he looked at her like, go right ahead. Ha

  3. Stormy is growing up!!! He is so good looking and I must say, spoiled with the others with very good reason...that's why we have our furkids. Love!!! I am staying far away from peanut butter!!! Holly likes anything...kind of like Stormy. The bad side of that is if I drop something on the floor, she scoops it up asap. Last year it was a pill and I had to call the vet to see if it would do anything to her. Fortunately it didn't. Her favorite treats are milkbones and little soft treats and definitely Busy Bones to chew. I don't know of anything yet that she won't eat!! Oh..socks...Holly also loves socks...I have a time doing the laundry...she is constantly stealing socks!

  4. I don't blame George, Debbie. Fake bacon is just wrong.

  5. Stormy cleans my floors too, Deborah. I was making a dish with tomato sauce and some of it dripped off the spoon as I was cooking. Stormy, my little sous chef, had it licked up off the floor before I could get a paper towel.

Amazing how they can pick out the socks. Stormy will pass by every other article of clothing, but latches right on to the socks. I once went to bed and left a basket of clean laundry on the floor, and when we woke up he had every single sock out and on the floor. Had to wash them all over again.

  6. Amen Nona!

  7. Cali will eat whatever you put in front of her with the exception of citrus or onion. Thankfully she doesn't eat my laundry but I do have to keep an eye on sticks. She goes after those things like a beaver and while I appreciate her efforts to make mulch, I don't really think that's the best way to go about it!

  8. Tater just loves peanut butter, right off the spoon, milkbones also are my way of getting him in his cage at night also. And doing laundry requires me to have him in his cage or he has everything all over the house.

  9. Mike, I think I have told you this before, but I love the name Tater. And all my dogs know they get a cookie when they go the crate. This morning, Stormy sat in his crate without even being asked just to get a cookie.

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
