Another doggie snack recall

American Health Kennels Inc. is voluntarily recalling baked doggie treats that contain peanut butter paste that originated at Peanut Corporation of America's Blakely, Ga., facility over concerns of possible salmonella contamination.

Click here to see the list, including lot and UPC numbers,  of AHK Bark Bars products being recalled. Remember that while it's not likely your otherwise healthy pet will get sick, the bacteria can be transmitted from pets to humans. If you suspect your pet has eaten something contaminated with salmonella, see your vet.

  1. I have a question about dog treats, though not the brand you mention in the recall. My dog is addicted to Dingo brand mini bones. These come in packages of 7 and 14, and are pretty expensive. Out of a package of 14, she will refuse at least three, and tims as high as 5. I sent a number of the refused bones to the company for testing, of course they said nothing is wrong with them. When I give her a bone, she will smell it before taking it or refusing it. My question, are other pet owners having the same problem with this treat? Thank you.

  2. yes, our dogs love these little bones too. And they have some that they will take, others they drop to the ground and bark for another. I'd say the ratio of 3 a package is about right.

I'm actually searching right now, because after having a Dingo - the only treats they eat now. She started acting funny. She's tender around the neck, and it seems to be thicker there. I'm not sure what the problem is and I'm concerned after reading of some of things these Dingo's are doing to the dogs that love them. Her Vet appointment is in the morning.

  3. That is what my dog will do, too!! But only on the big 14 or 21 pack!! If we get the card pack of 7, he eats every one. I wonder if the 21 pack sits around longer and they get stale or something?? But the 21 pack seals at the top and the 7 card isn't sealed very well. Maybee they air out in the card and are better to them??

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
