The Happy Wag

Sick day

I was out of the office yesterday battling what I hope will be the last nasty cold of the season. Misery loves company, so Dexter hung out with me all day yesterday while I coughed, sneezed and wheezed.

As you can see we did not get much done. I snapped this picture with my BlackBerry while I was stretched out in bed. Dexter took his snooze on the chair. He was modeling the behavior I needed to feel better. I just followed his lead.

You are never lonely when you have a good dog.

  1. Awww... what a loyal and comforting pooch. My kitty will do the same. Even when I'm just having a bad day, she knows. And she will curl up with me any way she can.

I hope you're feeling better today Nona. :)

  2. I love the picture of Dexter! He looks very laid back and no doubt trying to tell you to do the same. There is nothing better than a good dog or cat to have with you when you are sick...they always seem to understand. Please get well soon Nona!

  3. Dexter knows a good chair when he sees it! Our previous dog used to have "sympathy sickness" when one of us was sick. She'd get all mopey and lethargic with us and when we felt better, she felt better. Sometimes my cat Shade will have sympathy when I am sick but for the most part my cats are all about themselves!

  4. Let's talk about allergies in dogs. Our dog sufferies from some type of allergie. We thought maybe it was a food allergy so we switched her food and eliminated all foods but venison and potatoes. She is still licking her paws raw. The vet prescribed medication and it helps but has side effects. What do your readers think about allergie testing? Is it worth the cost involved? Anyone have good results?

    Thanks.

  5. Excellent topic, Pam. Dexter licks one of his paws raw as well and I don't know if it's allergies or if he just has OCD (when he can't lick his paw he will lick whatever surface is near his paw, making me think it's psychological.)

Any other readers have any experience with allergy tests in dogs?

  6. My dog doesn't have allergies but she is a licker. We just had to have a lick granuloma taken off of her leg because she gets OCD about it. I did some reseach on it and it says you can give them medicine (think prozac-type stuff) to help with the behavioral issue of licking. Some dogs apparently are inherently nervous or get upset easily and the meds help. Anyway, my point is that your dog may not have an allergy but a behavioral issue instead.

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
