Bargain deal on beautiful kitties

Come on, you know you want a couple of new kitties in your home. Don't let a slow economy stop you from adding a little feline fun to your family.

Adoption fees have been lowered at Angels of Assisi to help them reduce their adorable inventory of cats, including the kitties that were rescued from Giles County. The no-kill shelter in downtown Roanoke is offering cats for a $35 adoption fee, or two felines for the low, low price of $50.

All the kitties have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on their vaccinations.

According to a news release I got yesterday, many of the kitties are starting to get depressed from being stuck in crates all day. They need a little human interaction to get their purr motors running again.

I am including this photo to remind you how much fun life with cats can be. The two pocket-sized kitties in this picture were adopted from Angels by the family of Jordan Fifer, a multi-media producer for roanoke.com. Kittens Gil and Gilah love hanging out with Jordan's brother David.

  2. I would have a hundred cats if it were possible. As it is, I have my hands full with two. The latest edition, Abby, who is an occasional celebrity on the Happy Wag, has added so much love and amusement to the household I can't help but recommend that if anyone out there can find a place in their home for a sweet, loving ball of fur, please adopt! P.S. I have heard that there is a shortage of Kitten Chow at Angels so if you can't adopt, then perhaps you can contribute to their care.

  3. Love the picture!!! I second the opinion from Sandy - if you can adopt at least one do so. I can't imagine my life without Shade and Gracie and although I can't add another one to the mix right now I will always have a cat in my life.

  4. Believe me, if I could do it all, I would adopt a couple of more cats. We are just at the limit of sanity at my house with three dogs and two cats. But Sandy brings up an excellent point: If you can't adopt but would still like to help, Angels could always use Purina or Purina One cat or kitten chow and litter.
(In case anyone is curious, they specify Purina because it's best to keep the kitties on a steady diet of the same formula of food.)

  5. I would LOVE to adopt more kitties but we have a houseful right now with 5 cats and 1 dog (house cats - my cats don't do outside - and all absolutely spoiled rotten I might add). There's never a dull moment at our house! There's always somebody wrestling or playing or doing something cute or keeping our laps warm or helping me read a book, a magazine or the newspaper (they're all so helpful that way). When Angels of Assisi had that fire and they showed all those cats in crates it just broke my heart and I wanted to run down and gather them all up and bring them home. All I can do is take care of mine to the best of my ability and when the time comes I will adopt our new Furkids from a shelter.

  6. I couldn't agree more, Cindy. I would love to take them all in but that's kind of how they ended up there in the first place. You can't take in more pets than you can reasonably love and care for; it's not fair to you or your pets. It's just so sad because I would love to see all these cats find good homes.

I know I am kind of preaching to the choir here. Most people who read this blog already have pets, love furry critters and would do more if they could. But your head has to rule your heart when it comes to adopting pets.

  7. If only the public would try to understand the "spay or neuter concept, there would be far less unwanted animals. There has got to be harsher laws to punish animal abusers.
As a mommy to 4 cats and 1 dog, I know how expensive it is to keep pets healthy. If you can't afford it, please don't have animals.

The Angels of Assisi do a great job. Please support them anyways you can

  8. That is the cutest picture! I love how the cats are just hanging out, looking up at David. They look a little like my Zoe with the calico spots.
I want another cat. But hubs wants a dog.

  9. Hard to tell which of the three pictured is cuter! Anyone who adopts shelter cats immediately scores points for any number of rewards in later life. The humans can only benefit from adding a feline to the family (or two at least. Good job! Enjoy for many years in the future...Susan

  10. if i had a nickel for every time i've heard, "oh i can't volunteer at the shelter, i'd wind up taking them all home!!!" please volunteer with your local animal rescue group, even if you can't adopt more animals. one great need we have in our organization is people who will take animals to the vet for their spay/neuter/shots so they can go to other rescues that help find homes for them. you wouldn't have to worry about wanting to take them home and keep them--they already have a place to go. if nothing else, adopt a volunteer! i'd love it if someone would mow my lawn, weed my garden or cook me a meal or 2 for my freezer while i'm at the shelter answering phones, walking dogs and scooping poop or transporting animals all over the county getting them ready to go to rescues to be adopted out. it takes hours of volunteer work to save a shelter animal from euthanasia and most volunteers i know are teetering on the edge of burnout all the time from overwork. we have jobs and sick relatives and homes and yards to keep up too and we often wind up neglecting something so we can do what needs to be done. so if you can't bear to work at the shelter, think about lending a hand to someone who does.

    WOOF!

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
