Basement kitties at a bargain-basement discount

(The title of this blog post probably only makes sense if you follow the blog LOLcats, where black cats are called Basement Kitty and white cats are called Ceiling Kitty. This may only be funny to me. Carry on.)

Black cats are always special and this weekend they are available at a specially discounted adoption fee at the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
Today through Sunday, you can add a coal-colored kitty to your family for $20 off the normal adoption fee.

Cats older than 6-months can be adopted for $45 dollars and little kittens can be adopted for $65. All pets adopted from the RVSPCA are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on all their shots.

That's a bargain for a purring little bundle that will love you, not ruin your black pants with hair, and boss you around for years to come.

  1. We have one basement kitty already, and she is a handful. She is the alpha inside the house, and everyone knows it and tries to challenge her. They don't get far. I think she actually enjoys growling and chasing them around the house and being chased. But, when she's by herself, she's one of the sweetest cats I've had. She was a rescue from a trailer park around Halloween several years ago. Some kids had taken to throwing rocks at her, so she still doesn't like kids or loud/obnoxious people at all, but we've managed to give her a happy home that she enjoys. But, for about a week or so around the end of October, we keep her inside just to be safe.

  2. We adopted a black cat from the RVSCPA in February of this year. She had been there for 1 1/2 years, because of peoples lack of wanted a black cat. Let me first tell you that I am not a cat person. I never really took to cats. This was a gift to my fiance'.

Her personality is amazing. I will never...EVER get a cat other than a black one. She is the best! Her mannerisms are so close to humanlike it is hilarious. I do not understand why so many think of a black cat as a problem kitty.

Simply put, she is a member of our family and I encourage ANYONE that if you are looking for a cat, please, just take 10 mintues with a black cat from the SPCA....just 10 minutes. If you don't feel a connection, then fine. But seriously, we gave our kitty that 10 minutes of time and we found the best cat in the world!

I also applaud the Roanoke County ASPCA tremendously for taking care of her while so many people passed her up.

Take the 10 minute challenge as I called it.

  3. My daughter and I adopted a fluffy black cat from the RVSPCA 4 years ago. She has been one of the sweetest kitties I've ever had.

  4. I had a Basement Kitty when I was a kid that we named Samantha (after "Bewitched" which we watched in reruns, thankyouverymuch, so I am not dating myself toooo much.)

Anyway, Sam was a fantastic cat. She was sweet and cuddly and, until Thai walked into my life, was the best kitty I ever had.

I think of Thai as half ceiling/half basement, by they way.

Foster homes for the holidays

The Roanoke Valley SPCA is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program.

Over 13,000 pet rescue organizations nationwide are trying to empty the kennels for Christmas, encouraging families to open their home for the holidays to an adoptable pet waiting for a forever home.

Fostered pets can be picked up between December 18-23, and can be returned to the RVSPCA between December 30-January 2.

The RVSPCA will provide all needed supplies and support to the temporary families. You can view all of the pets online at www.rvspca.org, or visit the shelter to meet them.  The goal is to have each of these pets into a home by noon on December 23.

Ann Marie Sweeney, foster coordinator for the RVSPCA, will answer questions about the program for people interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need.  Contact Sweeney at 344-4840, ext. 208 or e-mail asweeney@rvspca.org.
