The Happy Wag

A visit to Best Friends

I am a bit tardy (like a week late actually) but here is the link to last Monday's Happy Wag newspaper column.

I really enjoyed talking to Beverly Amsler, who spent a week volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, for this article.

If you have the National Geographic Channel on your cable service, you can learn more about Best Friends on the television show "Dogtown" which will air new episodes in January. Reruns from prior seasons are being aired now.

The sanctuary is home to now 20 of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dog fighting operation. At Best Friends, they are known as the Vicktory dogs. Two have been adopted since they came to Best Friends, the others are still being rehabilitated. One dog, Meryl, is court ordered to spend the rest of her life at the sanctuary.

Amsler sent me this photo of Little Red, one of the Vicktory dogs, who was kept in the section where Amsler was volunteering. All of the Vicktory dogs can only be handled by staff, so volunteers cannot walk or socialize with them yet.

If you would like to contact Beverly Amsler about organizing a group of volunteers to go to Best Friends, please e-mail her at newsrus@aol.com.
