Here's one way to get your snow fix
Jennifer Pfister-Santoroski sent me an e-mail the other day noting her family's disappointment with Roanoke's bizarre snow drought, particularly that of her son, Mark. But Jennifer's parents in Giles County got 2 inches of snow last week, so she hauled a little bit of it back for Mark (left) and his friend Thomas Latham to play in. (Full photo here) "... I grabbed all five of our coolers and headed for the countryside. I packed in as much snow as I could and then headed back to Roanoke ..." Jennifer wrote. "It was a very small patch yet it did provide one-hour worth of fun of snowball fights and itty-bitty snowmen. We received many double-takes from people driving down the street, and the boys took on snowball fights with the UPS guy, mail carrier and flower delivery man. ... With our first snow taken care of, the boys can’t stop talking about it all! It was well-worth the 3-hour round trip, and we are now a little less snow-envious. We still are hoping for a real snow right here in Roanoke yet if it snows around us once again – this time I’ll just drive the boys to the snow."

Most of our friends and neighbors go on Winter getaways to warmer weather, but I am planning a trip to head North or West the next time snow is forecast. It won't be the same as waking up at night and seeing it fall so softly and beautifully to the ground in a peaceful darkness. But I am not missing out this year. To the snow I go!

But the kids should definitely not get involved with throwing snowballs at the letter carrier. Even if they know him or her well and the carrier has given permission to the kids and the parents to allow it. And even if the kids are too small to possibly throw one hard enough to hurt or even hit the carrier. Reason: Some busybody neighbor or passerby or car driver may see the incident and report it directly to the postmaster or letter carrier manager. And guess who gets in trouble then? The letter carrier!! I am serious. It happened (luckily I was not personally involved) at a post office in a different city where I used to work. Sigh Sorry for the sermon.

That's adorable! My two children got a bit of a snow fix this past weekend also. They went to visit family in Grundy,Va. and were able to play in about three inches of snow..as it melted over the weekend.
