Late-night showers, storms firing along Blue Ridge
UPDATE 12:30 PM: Flash flood warning for City of Roanoke, Salem, parts of Roanoke County and northwestern Franklin County as heavy storms continue to move over the same areas repeatedly. Torrential rain occuring now. Very reminiscent of Monday morning. END UPDATE
There were a few showers and storms to our west through the afternoon, but they have started developing along the Blue Ridge this evening in response to an upper-level disturbance to our west. Showers and storms will also be possible Thursday as a weak cold front approaches, a few of which could be strong or even severe.

Some of the heavier rain is training over the Roanoke Valley ... so some places might get a good dump.

The heaviest rain has been moving over the central and eastern parts of Roanoke and Roanoke County, with less rain out toward Salem and western Roanoke County ... the creek near where I live in Southwest Roanoke County is the most swollen I have seen it in the past 4 years from very fast runoff (late June 2006 was the only other time it was close).

.75 inches in the Wirtz area this am. In the last 17 days we had 2.81 inches(11July) then 1.69 inches(15July) then .26 inches(20July) and this am .75 inches(23July) of rain. Lat year we could buy a drop of rain. Is this the effects of El Nino ?

Frank: I don't really think our wetness in spring and summer has much to do with El Nino. Those effects don't usually doesn't kick in til fall, and it's usually focused on strong lows moving west to east across the southern U.S. We've been getting rain/storms lately from systems diving southeastward lifting some moisture in front of them.
