Heavy rain potential for Thursday?

Monday's Hazards Assessment map from the Climate Prediction Center highlights the potential for heavy rain in our region on Thursday. That moisture will increase and showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous by Thursday is likely as a slow-moving low along the Gulf Coast wobbles northeastward. But what could push this into a broader episode of heavy rain is if we get caught in an easterly fetch of wind off the Atlantic between the low and high pressure to the north. If this happens, the upslope rain machine could be in full gear, and the glide uphill from the Atlantic up the Piedmont to the Appalachians may squeeze out some gully-washer downpours. Because of the slow-moving nature and somewhat uncertain progression of the low, this scenario is not written in stone yet. Some heavy downpours will likely occur with the stronger showers and storms, but a widespread pouring rainfall is not certain as of yet. Stay tuned.

  1. I'm not sure about other folks, but I know it's been a bit dry of late at my house while there has been ample rain elsewhere. Things are still nice and green though thanks to temps coming down, but I think I need to get my weedeating done this evening now, along with my overseeding.

  2. We may need to move this threat up a few hours to Wednesday night. The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center is projecting widespread 1-inch totals in our region for the period from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning.
