Fall colors: What are you seeing?
I wrote in Friday's Weather Journal column about fall foliage, talking to Virginia Tech forestry expert John Seiler (thanks to blog commenter Nate for the suggestion!). What are you seeing with fall colors so far? And how do you expect the foliage to be in Southwest Virginia when it peaks?

I'm surprised that this hasn't gotten more comments.
I'm in Blacksburg..about five minutes from the Montgomery County Medical Center and I've noticed that a lot of our most beautiful trees (the ones I see from my window anyway) have already lost most of their leaves. I'm not good with the names of trees..sorry! They are dropping far too soon and before they were able to reach their peak in color. There are still plenty of trees that are still green though..I have noticed that many of the leaves starting to turn brown around the edges and I'm seeing some bright yellows as well. Occasionally you can see a burst of bright orange or red.
I think we'll have some nice displays in color, but I'm not betting on the most brilliant of falls.
This is all just my opinion..I have NO formal knowledge in this area.

Glad my tip helped out. Dr. Seiler was easily one of my favorite forestry professors at Tech.
