Weather Journal

Yes, that is the 's-word' this weekend ... after lots of rain

Chilly, rainy weather is on tap through the weekend with some cold-air damming from the northeast and an active jet stream bringing a series of storms across the country that will sling Gulf of Mexico moisture over that cooler air. The rain is on the Roanoke Valley's doorstep right now (click here for local National Weather Service radar).

And by the weekend, higher elevations in our area may see the first snowflakes of the season behind a cold front.

It will take me a few days to get back in the weather groove. I've barely paid attention during the past week after being in Arkansas for my dad's funeral.

I do know that, suddenly, the weather pattern looks a lot like winter.

  1. Kevin,

I'm very sorry for your loss. I've missed the blog the last few days --I got caught completely off guard by the cool weather on Monday, so I'm looking forward to being back in the loop! Take your time getting back into the groove, and take care of yourself.

  2. Hey Kevin,

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. That is one of the most difficult things in life to go through. I hope you have some great memories to look back on.

  4. When you put "Joe Bastardi" and "winter thoughts" in the same sentence, I knew he would be calling for cold and snowy in the East, without even looking.

If this week's weather pattern were 2 months later, it would definitely hold lots of snow/ice potential. So he could be right this time. Time will tell.

  5. Kevin, my dad died 55 years ago, and not many days goes by that something doesn't remind me of him. A loss that that can't be replaced. Mighty sorry to hear about it.

  8. Welcome back,
I lost my mom a couple of weeks ago, and it is a hard adjustment to go back to work and play. Take your time!
Probably will see some showers of snow around Carroll if anywhere this weekend.

  9. I know PA is not exactly our neighbor but I found it interesting that SW PA has issued Winter Storm Watches for Thursday - Friday. I don't recall potential winter storms in the area this early in the year.--Bring it on!!

  10. There will be some breaks in Weather Journal off and on through the next 6 weeks or so as I have to deal with details. I plan to be going full throttle, though, by the time winter gets rolling.

  11. Kevin,
I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad. It's good to see you back here. I can't believe we are already seeing snow in the forecast. Although I seem to remember that not too long ago you said something about "snow flakes mixed in with the leaves flying"..or something similar.

God Bless you and your family.

  12. I'm very sorry to hear about your father Kevin. I will be praying for you and your family. Hope all is well in the days ahead.

I experienced my first California storm yesterday. No fun at all. I can't wait to be back in Virginia. Hopefully it will be before the first flakes fall...

    Take care Kevin.
