Sunny, warm days will be gone by the weekend

The timing isn't working out for anyone who wants a sunny Saturday. The sunny, warm days will be today and Thursday ... highs in the 70s, generally, after cool mornings in the 40s. Rain returns Friday with the next cold front -- Friday night football games look to be soggy right now -- lingering into Saturday.  Sunday, though, looks like it may be nice with sunshine, highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s, perhaps a good leaf-peeping day.

This is a result of the progressive jet stream pattern we are in, with fronts pushed across the nation about every 5 days, a few days warmup followed by a cooldown. For now, it appears most of the fronts are of Pacific origin, so no extreme chill-outs are likely. Very typical October weather.

  1. I guess I'll have to try and do most of my last bits of yard work in the waning hours of daylight today and tomorrow, unless I can find a way to take off early one day. The nice weather has been quite pleasant, especially after the all too chilly and windy weekend.

  2. Kevin, based on WGN Chicago's Tom Skilling we are in for some real cold weather around Halloween. Any thoughts? I remember some snow/rain mix back in 1993 Halloween night.

  3. Steve: I was in Arkansas in 1993 and we got 1 1/2 inches of snow the night before Halloween. I was covering high school football that night in the cold, windy rain before it changed over. Earliest measurable snow I ever saw there. But we got precious little snow in the winter after that.

  4. I remember one year we got a dusting of snow on halloween in Virginia Beach...might have been that same 1993 year, I just remember sitting on the porch freezing that night while passing out candy.
