Classic October week on tap once showers leave
Getting past Saturday morning's showers, the advancing cool front is going to clear the way for a pretty classic late October week ... highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s, lots of sunshine and little rain. Sunday should be a good day for some leaf-peeping, as will much of the rest of the week, if you can make it out. There appear to be no hot, cold or wet extremes anywhere on the horizon.

Leaf looking: we finally have lots of color around here (SW Roanoke County, very close to Sugar Loaf Mountain). Colors seem to be pretty good, but they would be even better if we were to get a drenching rain in here. I remember it was either last year or two years ago we were looking at a pretty poor foliage season, when suddenly we got three straight nights of heavy rains, and suddenly we had fabulous foliage.

So true about the color in the mountains. What a beautiful day in Southwest virginia.

I looked at the actual precip this year vs. the normal year-to-date number, and thanks to a dry October, we are less than 1 inch above normal year-to-date. If we get the roughly 7 inches (normal for these last 10 weeks of the year) between now and December 31, this could be the first year since I moved to the Roanoke valley in 1997 that would be within one inch of normal. Or did that also occur in 1998 or some other year, Kevin?

Our nearby weather station, 5 miles SW of Wytheville has recorded a below freezing temperature for 7 of the last nine days. I think the growing season is over!
