Weather Journal taking a long break

The Weather Journal blog and newspaper column are on hiatus through Thanksgiving. I am taking some leave to deal with some family matters.

On the weather front, it's probably a good time to take a long break, before winter gets rolling. I might jump back on here if something extraordinary is happening, but otherwise, don't expect to see blog posts for nearly 3 weeks.

  1. I will note that Tropical Storm Ida has strengthened rapidly to near hurricane strength and may make a run into the Gulf. Colder waters in the northern Gulf and upper-level shearing winds probably will keep the storm from reaching the US as a hurricane, but it could dump a lot of rain next week. This could be a big story on my hiatus for the Southeast, but folks in our region should keep an eye on it.

  2. By the way ... there were 261 entries in the snowfall prediction contest, 50 more than last year ... looks like as a whole, the predictions were quite a bit more higher than last year's were. I'll compile some information on the picks when I return from my leave later this month.

  4. Watching the latest update, it's up to CAT 2 and the Weather Channel folks are showing the low being up near this area by Wed or so with a lot of rain. The NWS is showing it turning away from the area sooner and staying further south, so I guess we'll see what happens.
