The Wild Life, with Mark Taylor

First day at the outdoor show comes to a close

The doors close at the show in a couple of minutes.

The good news is I got my story done. I went up to give my talk and exactly zero people showed up. But that gave me time to finish writing. The editor called after I filed it and said he didn't make any major changes.

With the exception of Tom Bechdel's calls, the show has been really quiet. I usually don't come to these things on Fridays so I don't know how it compares to most Fridays. But some of the vendors are saying it was slower than usual and all are hoping it gets a lot busier tomorrow. I'm sure it will be busier.

I had a good time today talking with people. Quite a few I already knew, which makes sense being as we're all out there doing the outdoors thing. But I met some new people, too, and that was good.

Will be interesting to see how it goes tomorrow.

  2. It's kind of ridiculous...it's all about wealthy people buying things to go somewhere else to do things. Or people that..well..I don't know...Anybody with any sense knows that hunting isn't hard. It just requires that you have the land to go do it on. Same with fishing. Let's face it. There is NO real fishing around here. Except maybe at Moomaw.. Hell, you can't even eat the fish you catch around here! (Unless it's stocked "fake" trout). It's got either toxins or bacteria (James River problem)! This outdoor show..sorry, but it's for the lame or the wealthy!! My opinion! Since when did "outdoors" mean lets go catch or kill animals?? Really strange.....I can see coyote and groundhog killing...deer too...but...it ain't that hard!!!It ain't rocket science!!

  3. I'm not wealthy, I don't own land, I think Roanoke has some great fishing nearby and I even eat some of the fish I catch.

I guess that makes me an anomaly.

  4. Easy????? Walk with me one week for 6 days in a row at 330 am to the top of North Mnt.(elavation 3000ft) It only takes a couple hours each way and Im not talking about on a trail. Then you get lucky enough to harvest a 150lb or bigger Buck or better yet a 500 lb black bear. Then if your lucky enough to have a friend with you that will help you drag that trophy off the mountain along with your back packs and weapons. That will take you atleast 3-4 hours back down the mountain. My bear took 6 hours. Thats the price I pay as a outdoor loving hunter and will continue to do it for as long as my health allows me. .......EASY????!!!! Dont think so!!! .........Moe

  5. hunting is easy ? lol, I can tell D. West hasnt stomped miles thru national forest just to get to a pre scouted deer stand, I guess it could be easy if you got your own land and go out on your deck at sunrise with a cup of coffee and a rifle and shoot them off the deck, but come on, that isnt hunting. Us true hunters put in plenty of hours of scouting and all the time to get our equipment in order to get ready, and it doesnt get easy getting uo at 3:30 in the morning to get ready and not getting to bed til 10 or 11 o`clock, try that for 6 straight days, then tell me how easy it is,
Hey Mark, I had two buddys that didnt come to the outdoor show with me because they was going to the bristol race like you was talking bout
