Cool weather hints at hot hunting on tap
Well, it finally feels like October. I actually felt it change.
Saturday morning started out mild and damp. Then the wind picked up and I'm pretty sure it got colder as I sat there in my stand.
Hunting was slow. I saw just one deer and it was too far away to even get a good ID on it. But I still love that spot. I think I'll rest it until later in the month.
I think it has potential as a decoy spot so I may try it with my little buck decoy the first week of November. That's muzzleloader season but I'll probably bow hunt if I have the decoy out.
This is when things tend to get quiet for a bit out there -- and I just this second got an e-mail from a hunter complaining about how slow it has been -- so I'm not crushed that my busy schedule will make it tough for me to hunt this week.
Oh, we have a new blog publishing system. Readers should notice a difference, but I hope I can be a little faster approving comments. If you have this blog bookmarked (and, thanks, if you do) you might want to bookmark it again just to be safe.
Keep the reports coming and safe hunting.

Mark,
When will the 'site' with the pictures of the 2008 season, be up and running? When I try to see any 2008 pictures, it says "the page is not available."
Thanks,
Brent

Brent,
Our self-posting system is out of commission. The only place we're going to be able to do pix this year is the blog.
I'm going to run a note in an upcoming column putting the word out on that -- then stand by to get slammed with the submissions.
But the pix are hugely popular so it's a good problem to have.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Oh yeah, it was freezing this morning in Bedford, but I love it!! Things still haven't picked up much down here but hopefully they will as the week goes on. Only seen 4 doe this morning, and of course, they were out of bow range.Man I hate that! Curious if any one hunting the Huddleston area are seeing much buck activity? I have pictures of them this summer but haven't seen not a one yet!

Glad to see the Outdoor Blog looking more vibrant, A+, was a little shocked on the title of your column today in the "RT" Dead deer photos have to give that one B-, On the content of the story, informative, direct, and still giving the hunters what they want..... Bragging rights.
Again A+ Overall A
I am glad you said something about using a deer decoy, a hunting associate told me using deer decoys was illegal, yet I could never find anything about not using them in the Hunting Virginia Rule Book.
Another A for extra credit.
Thank you for your years of information to the Virginia natives and for a person that's still learning to hunt. Since my very first time deer hunting in 2003 I have harvested 7 in my book...
Not bad,not bad at all.

JR,
I bet it was right nippy out there yesterday. Rather have that than heat and mosquitoes. Let's just hope it stays cool.
Backlash,
Re: Today's headline. The writers can suggest headlines (I didn't in this case) but the folks on the copy desk are ultimately responsible. They've come up with good ones more times than not.
Congrats on your great track record so early in your hunting career here. You're right: not bad at all.
I used a decoy once last year and it was super exciting. Maybe I'll write up the details one of these days.
