Donna Justus with a nice Tazewell County black bear

Donna Justus was deer hunting in Tazewell County on Nov. 26 when this nice bruin showed up. This is her first bear, and you can tell she's just a bit proud.

The only hitch with the hunt was that Gary, Donna's 4-year-old grandson and constant hunting companion, stayed home to take a nap that afternoon. Gary looks a little bummed but I bet he'll get over it.

  2. Nice bear and great job Donna. Gary.....dont feel bad dude, you stick with it and your day will be soon. Donna, kudo's in taking your grandson with you when out in the woods. Wish more people would do the same! Congradulations!!!

Mark Taylor.

While growing up in rural Southern Oregon, Mark Taylor developed a passion for the outdoors while he and his younger brother tagged along with their father on fishing, hunting and camping adventures.

Graduating from Northwestern University in 1988, Taylor spent four years as an officer in the U.S. Navy based in Norfolk before moving into journalism.

After five years writing about the military for a Norfolk-based publishing company, he became the outdoors editor at The Roanoke Times in 1998. He lives in Roanoke with his wife and twin daughters.
