The Wild Life, with Mark Taylor

Lynn Jefferies with a monstrous 10-pointer

In the fall I get quite a few calls about "huge" bucks, most from friends or family members of the lucky hunters.

When such a call comes from a taxidermist, I tend to pay a little more attention. So when I got such a call about a huge 10-pointer killed in Alleghany County, I made a trip out to Glenda Faulkner's Deer Doctor's Taxidermy near Fincastle.

Here's the buck and the hunter.

Lynn Jefferies of Rich Patch is an avid hunter. She knew she had a good buck but didn't know how good until people started telling her.

I can assure you it is as massive as it appears in this photo.

The inside spread is 24 inches, and it's 27.5 inches from tip to tip. Other than the extraordinary brow tines, the tines aren't particularly long. The G-2s are about 6 inches; the G-3s about 9 inches. It didn't have a single sticker that I recall. And, obviously, it's got awesome mass throughout. I threw some really basic numbers down on a Boone and Crockett score sheet and I'm guessing it will gross around 170.

No matter what it eventually scores, this is one of those deer you look at an your jaw just drops.

  4. Congratulations, Lynn! What a huge trophy! My husband came home and said "I think one of your friends from high school got a huge buck." I haven't seen you in forever and didn't know you had taken up hunting. He hunts in Bath Co at Nimrod Hall, but I haven't gone in years.

Say "hi" to your family for me. I would love to catch up with you! Send me an email when you get a chance.

    Congrats again!! Take care!

  5. Great buck Lynn. It has been a while since I have seen one like that. It has been since I lived near you in Oriskany and hunted in Lignite. Congratulations.
