The Wild Life, with Mark Taylor

Another easy day on the glamorous outdoors beat

The other day I was in the photo department discussing the Tucked-Away Treasures series with photographer Sam Dean. Another shooter piped up, "I want to go on next summer's series."

I was holding a print of this photo at the time. I showed it to the photographer and said, "Yeah, doesn't this look like fun?"

This rainy day at Hungry Mother Lake was stop two on a 30-hour trip that included five hours of driving and a "break" spent trying to sleep for a few hours in a leaky tent. Plus, the fishing sucked.

Who wouldn't want to do that, huh?

As anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors -- being it hiking, fishing, hunting, biking, paddling, or whatever -- knows, it can get kind of miserable out there.

I'm not complaining. I love the outdoors, and being out there in difficult conditions is part of the deal. I'd go as far as saying it's part of the fun. I'd be out there anyway, so it's a nice bonus when it's actually part of the job.

  1. It's always the trips that don't go as planned that seem to be the ones that stick out years down the road...did you guys ever consider bass fishing at Douthat Lake? I know the trout fishing is well known, but there are some absolute hawgs in there that really don't receive the attention they deserve...I had one that was 5+ lbs. try to eat a brown that was on my line this past spring...the pickerel fishing is also a hidden gem there as well

-- Yep. Many of my "best" outdoors memories are of trips that were pretty rough at the time. As for Douthat, we did consider it but it ultimately didn't make the cut. It doesn't surprise me at all that you had a big bass trying to eat your trout. Little lakes that get stocked trout have some monster bass. I'd really like to spend some time fishing one of those places with a realistic trout swim bait. mt

  2. Hey.......any day on the water or in the woods is an awsome day! There is alot of folks out there that can not enjoy the moments as we all do, and even if I do not catch anything nor harvest an animal, IT BEATS WORK AND SITTIN" AT HOME!!! Although Mark, it is part of "work" for you......Lucky!

--Don't think I don't know how fortunate I am to have what, for me, is probably the best job in the world! mt
