The Wild Life, with Mark Taylor

Same deer? Or two different Floyd County bruisers?

Now these are the kinds of shots that can really make the days till Oct. 3 drag.

Not only is this a great buck -- or is it two bucks? I can't see a left G-3 in the head-on shot -- that's out during the day. But notice what's visible in the upper right hand of the frames? The hunter's stand.

His quote in his note was "I can't wait until Oct. 3!" And I don't blame him.

I'd be curious to hear what you all think on these being the same buck or not.

  1. Looks like 2 different bucks to me, that sure would make the days drag until opening day know that there are 2 bucks this size hanging out at my stand.

-The guy who sent me the shots just sent me an e-mail and assures me it's the same buck. He has a sequence that shows it has the same mark/injury on its snout as the first picture. mt

I was just to comment on Chad's post that it's the same buck, If you click on the individual picture and depending on you PC Screen if you stand up you will be able to antlers clearer.

I couldn't tell until I stood up from the natural light. Secondly if anyone was wondering about the new True Fire mechanical broadhead Switch Blade. They just featured it on a Closing the Distant show on VS.

4 deers shot and not one time was it a complete past through. Not saying it didn't kill the deers I'm saying they were no complete past through.

One deer even wen a 150 yds before they could find it by the time they got to it the following day coyotes had render it useless.

Just my opinion Switch Blade will not tip one of my arrows.

  3. Geez these deer pictures are pumping me up!!!

I was in Floyd Sunday helping a guy I work with attend to his stands, and I must say there are tons of deer sign in that part of the country.

Yeah Static Lines.......mechanicals are crap!!! I do not like depending on something to open up for me to make a kill. I know they may fly better but who cares if it will not deploy. Slick Tricks or Montec G5 is all I will shoot.

  5. I've been using Thunderheads for about 3 years and just switched over to the 2" Rage Mechanical broad head. Everyone I know is going to them this year, I guess from all the hype on T.V. it's got everyone pumped up about it but hopefully they will do the job.

Bob Mizek Director of Engineering of NAP Broadheads sent this email after inquiring about the Blood Runner Broadhead...

The BloodRunner is a great broadhead and a true ‘hybrid’. It’s aimed at reaching those customers that want the larger cutting diameter of a mechanical but are afraid of leaving a small hole if something were to go wrong and it did not open. (which has never once happened) I used it last year in testing and can tell you personally that it’s tough, strong, and sharp and makes great blood trails.

There are two great slow-motion videos of it on our website.

Jason if you view the Broadhead test gelatin of BR Broadhead you will notice the broadhead does a slight twist as it cuts through on slow motion.

I believe that this turning twisting motion creating a larger wound cavity than possibly the Rage.

From that observation I believe the Blood Runner will out perform the RAGE 4 to 1.

  7. I have use the G5 since they came out and have killed everthing I have
shot including a 537 pound bear in 06. I have no reason to switch, but if
I did it would be to the rage broadhead. My friend shot two eight pointers
in 07 and neither deer ran more than 40 yards. They performance was
awsome.A blind man could have followed the blood trail..................

  8. This broadhead debate is interesting. I'm going to start a separate thread for it.

  9. I really can't tell if it is the samr buck or not but it is obvious that this/these buck(s) are more filled out than the buck shown on Monday.

As for the broadheads, I have used Zwickey Black Diamond (200 grain w/insert 2-blade), Thunderheads (160 grain {2-blade}, 125 & 100 grain{3-blade}) and Muzzy (100 grain 3-blade) all with good success but my son has convinced me to try the mechanicals this year. I would have to say that all the advertising has played a part in this decision but I can assure you that if they don't function correctly they won't stay in my quiver for long!!

Practice regularly, pick a spot and shoot straight!!

  10. Static - thanks for the information, I just viewed a lot of videos on YouTube demonstrating the TheBloodRunner Broadhead. That is a unique broadhead but I'm going to give these Rage broadheads a try and see how it goes. I've been practicing my straight down at 5 and 10 yard shots and my advice is if you haven't practiced these shots then you need to because you never know when a deer will walk right under your stand and that is the only shot you have. I'm holding my 20 yard pin about 8 inches low for a 5-10 yard shot and it is working out good.

Solid advice..I will popping in to see the guys at Whitetail Outfitters in Riner tomorrow for the hook up.

  12. Static,

My first visit to Whitetail Outfitters in Riner was last Saturday and I bought my wife her first bow. It's a Matthews Menace which is designed for women, she's only interested in shooting at targets right now but step 2 will be to introduce her to the woods. Those guys at Whitetail Outfiters run a top class place. Plus, if you haven't seen it already then check that HUGE black bear out that they have mounted in there; it could pass for a Grizzly.

  13. To reel the original post back in, I'd say yes that is the same deer....and what a nice wide buck he is. I'd be in that ladder stand Oct 3!

  14. Jason,
Darrell runs a top notch store out at Whitetail Outfitters. He shot that bear on a coastal NC bear hunt. And it is as big as a Grizzly! You can't go wrong with Darrell and Whitetail Outfitters in Riner or with Tony and the folks at Pembroke Stop N Save on 460 in Giles County.
