The Wild Life, with Mark Taylor

Chris Sigmon with his great opening day muzzleloader kill

Chris Sigmon hadn't gotten a chance to hunt this year until the muzzleloader opener. Sigmon, who has just been hunting a few years, said the hunt turned out to be the shortest in his brief career of chasing whitetails.

He had been in the stand only a few minutes on Saturday afternoon when he turned to see this doe staring at him at a range of just 40 yards. Because he was hunting in an earn-a-buck county, Sigmon had already made up his mind to shoot a mature doe if he got the opportunity.

The deer was on to him, stomping and trying to get him to move. But Sigmon was patient. After about five minutes the deer turned and offered a broadside shot.

Sigmon had a great commentary on his hunt. Here's what he wrote: "I'm 23 and have only been hunting since I was 19; I always wonder if seasoned hunters only get excited over bucks. I cannot control my heart rate when I see any deer, which is why I love hunting."

I'm not sure I'd call myself a veteran, but I've been hunting deer for about 30 years. My heart still pounds whenever I get a deer close, even if it's one I have no intention of shooting.

  1. And your grin is a testament to that pleasure of the hunt.

    Way to go Chris!

  2. Two things that stick out for me in this photo. First is the proud smile & second is the open sites on that smoke stick. There isn't any feeling in the world like the "rush" from having deer on top of you, I hope that feeling never goes away from me.

  5. Great job Chris. I have been hunting for 30 years now. I took a nice five point last Thursday with my bow, and after the shot was taken I found my legs quivering from the excitement. I hope I, we, never loose that excitement. Again, great job!

  6. Way to go Chris!
I'm still new at this hunting game myself and I sure know how exciting it is to see a deer. Guys laugh at me when I tell them about what I seen and they always ask "did you shoot?" I reply "NO, but it sure was awsome!" They think I'm crazy or something.
Great looking doe Chris and best of luck to you during the firearm season. Be safe buddy and congradulations dude.

  7. Way to go! The rush is the same for me as well, doesn't matter whether it's a buck or a doe.
