New Target coupon policy

Target updated its coupon policy in June, and there are a few notable changes.

First of all, they will not accept  internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.

Second, BOGO coupons can’t be combined — you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free. Also, “a second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.”
There are exclusions to this rule, though, if you have coupons from Target.  If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon maybe used on the first item. Also, if a manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.

Third, the policy states that a coupon’s amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. That means no cash back like at Walmart.

This last rule is the worst, I think. Are you a frequent Target shopper? How do you feel about their updated coupon policy?

Rentals a way to save on games

Video games have come a long way since the original Nintendo system my family had when I was young.

The quality of the graphics and controllers has risen, but so has the price of games. Now there are some new options for gamers who want to give these games a test run before purchase, or for those who want a few days of entertainment for cheap.

Games can be rented from multiple sources and in a variety of ways.

Redbox, the most recent company to join the game rental business, offers games for PlayStation 3,  Xbox  and Wii for $2 a night (plus tax). There are Redbox kiosks all over the Roanoke and New River valleys, making this a convenient option. However, Redbox kiosks can  carry only a limited number of copies of each game, so there’s a risk of the most popular games being  unavailable.

Meanwhile, GameFly, Gamerang, GottaPlay and Blockbuster By Mail deliver game rentals by mail. The price of each service varies, but each is considerably cheaper per rental than the $50 or more to buy a game. Monthly subscriptions do add up, but for gamers who tend to get bored with games quickly, this is a good option.

Blog reader Dave commented on a post about the latest Redbox news, saying, “There’s a lot of games that look interesting, but I’m not going to shell out $20 – $60 to try out. This is a great idea.”

The details
For a monthly fee, GameFly, Gamerang, GottaPlay and Blockbuster By Mail all offer a certain number of games per month, and shipping charges are included.
Blockbuster By Mail offers a basic subscription for $11.99 a month, which allows renters to receive one game or DVD at a time for an unlimited number of times each month. The game systems supported include Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. For two games/DVDs, the subscription costs rises to $16.99 a month; for three, $19.99 a month.

GameFly, which offers a free month trial and other introductory deals, has more than 7,000 game titles available for rent. Games are available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance for a monthly fee of $15.95 for one game at a time or $22.95 for two games at a time.

GameFly also offers perks to its subscribers. Members earn rewards that can be used toward game purchases — the longer you’re a member, the more valuable the rewards.

Gamerang offers free shipping on more than 6,500 Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, GameCube and Wii games.

This delivery service also has a variety of membership plans, starting out at $17.95 a month for one game. For three games at a time, users pay $49.95 plus a refundable $75 deposit; and for four games out at a time, users pay $59.95 plus a refundable $100 deposit.

With more than 4,000 titles (less than some of the other options), GottaPlay offers games for Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS at only $11.95 for one game at a time per month or $19.95 for two games per month.

Have you tried any game rental services? Which do you prefer?

Tuesday freebies and deals: Amazon MP3s, foodie coupons and retail printables

Amazon is offering a free $2 credit for MP3s. Songs can be transferred into iTunes after being downloaded and work with any device. I prefer downloading from Amazon because it's often cheaper than iTunes.

It seems like the week before a holiday weekend always drags by a little slower than usual, so here are some goodies to help get you through.

Amazon is offering a free $2 MP3 credit through Thursday (June 30) with the code CLOUDMP3. Amazon is generally a little cheaper than iTunes, so this could probably earn you two free songs! Click here for more details.

Click here for a BOGO coupon for Baskin Robbins offering a free “scoop or swirl” with the purchase of a “scoop or swirl.” This printable coupon expires on July 4.

McDonald’s also has a BOGO coupon available good for a free lemonade, frappe or smoothie with the purchase of any lemonade, frappe or smoothie. This offer expires on July 31.

Click here for a Bath & Body Works printable coupon good for $10 off of a $30 purchase. The store is having it’s “Hello Yellow” sale currently with items up to 75% off, so you can really stock up and save on gifts (or some goodies for yourself) by combining sale items with the coupon. This offer expires on July 5.

NeilMed is offering free neti pots through its Facebok page. “Like” the page and you’ll be able to request the free neti pot with two free sinus rinse packets. There aren’t any details about when this offer expires, so if you’re interested you should check it out now!

Through July 10 you can save $10 off of a $50 purchase at JC Penney with this printable coupon. It doesn’t look like sale & clearance items are excluded, so give it a try on those, too.

You can save 50% on any regular priced Martha Stewart Crafts item at Joann Fabric through Thursday (June 30) with this printable coupon. The coupon is valid in-store only.

Hardee’s has released a printable coupon good for $1 off a hand breaded chicken sandwich. This coupon doesn’t expire until September 8, so there’s no rush to use it (but go ahead and print it out if you’re intrested, because they could take it down any time).

“Like” Logan’s Roadhouse on Facebook and you’ll have access to a printable buy one meal, get one meal free (up to $15) coupon. This coupon expires Thursday (June 30).

You make the rules

Last week, The Storefront blogger Amanda Codispoti asked a few co-workers and relatives about their rules for shopping. Answers varied from always checking out the clearance rack first to not worrying about the cost while on vacation.

Now she wants to know if you have any rules to shop by, so check it out here!

Throw a party for less

The cost of party goods, especially those with a theme like these, can add up fast. Check the dollar store for a variety of paper goods at a fraction of the cost.

Recently I had the task of putting together a birthday party for my sister. While party planning can stress out the most  mellow person, I figured out a few ways to cut corners on cost and still manage to throw a great shindig.

* Check the dollar store
Party cups, plates and napkins can add up to  a huge expense, especially if you’re searching for a particular theme or color. The dollar store has a surprisingly wide selection of paper goods in various prints and colors. I was lucky enough to find a whole set in a clearance bin and ended up paying only 50 cents each for matching cups, napkins and plates. Similar products can start between $3  and  $4 each at other stores. From time to time, Dollar General  even has printable coupons available on  its website (www.dg.com). In the past there have been coupons specifically for party goods.
I also picked up my decorations at the dollar store (a “Happy Birthday” sign and a few party horns), all for $1 or less.

* Bake your own cake
While baking is intimidating for some, boxed cake mixes are great for saving both money and time. A box of cake mix will only set you back a few dollars, while picking up a cake from a grocery store, bakery or ice cream shop (like Dairy Queen or Bruster’s ) will leave a dent in your wallet.
If you’re new to baking, start out with a basic sheet cake. Adding some colored icing is an easy way to top off the simple, one-layer cake. Though a homemade cake may not look as impressive as a store-bought one, the idea that you spent some extra time making the treat in honor of the birthday girl or boy makes it more special — not to mention cakes are for eating, not for looking pretty (though that’s sometimes a plus).

* Don’t have a meal
Start your party after lunch or after dinner to avoid the cost of feeding everyone. Birthday cake is the main event anyway, and having a few simple snacks like chips and dip goes a long way. If you do have a meal, try something simple and cheap like spaghetti, baked potatoes or even a potluck.

* Skip the favors
This step mainly applies to children’s parties, but some adults may feel pressured to send their guests home with something, too. As far as the toys given out after many kids parties, try skipping them all together. While a party favor can be an added bonus, many kids don’t expect them. As an alternative to the cheaply made toys that usually fill take-home party bags, think about sending a photo from the party out with thank you notes.

* Find a free venue
Community parks, especially those with covered picnic areas, are just one example of free party locations. Kids will love having play equipment around and adults can appreciate the open air and space. If you are providing a meal, many locations even have community grills. Spaces like this also make cleanup a breeze when paper goods are used. Dump everything once the party is over, and enjoy the fact that your home hasn’t been invaded, and then abandoned, by party goers.

Redbox introduces game rentals

The familiar Redbox kiosks now carry video games in addition to DVDs and Blu-Rays.

Just recently Redbox (known for their bright red movie kiosks outside grocery and drug stores) introduced video game rentals. Games for PS3, XBOX and Wii are all available for $2 a night (plus tax).

Considering the price of video games, this seems like a good way to try one out before purchasing it.

Have you picked up any games at a Redbox yet? Do you think renting out games is a good idea?

Sunday circular preview: Let the celebrations begin

This weekend is full of celebrations, just make sure you finish that Father's Day shopping so you can really enjoy it! Photo by InstantVoodoo.

This weekend is shaping up to be fantastic: personally, I’m excited about my birthday today, and it’s Father’s Day weekend! Hopefully we won’t have to deal with any terrible thunderstorms, but I don’t plan on letting them ruin anything if they do rumble up.

There aren’t quite as many ads this week, but the quality of what you’ll find is what’s important right? Well, there’s some good stuff to be found.

Rack Room will be having a sale on its clearance stock (A sale on top of a sale? I like it.) and there will be a coupon available.

Kroger will be having a bit sale, and promoting everything you’ll find in the store for $5 or under. There are tons of pantry staples on the list, so plan to stock up!

Target and Kmart are both aiming to please fans of “Cars 2.” Tons of movie-themed items will be on sale.

The CVS ad this week boasts that over $199 Extra Bucks are up for grabs starting Sunday. Make sure to use any coupons you have on top of the sale price — the Extra Bucks are just an added bonus.

Sears is the place to go Sunday for any last minute Father’s Day shoppers. There’s even a way you can be rewarded for your procrastination with a $25 gift card.

SmartSource and Redplum both have coupon booklets coming out Sunday. You’ll find tons of coupons to use before making Dad an awesome holiday meal, or coupons to take him out for his special day.

Have you finished your Father’s Day shopping? If so, I hope you found a deal. If not, you’ve got two days left. Get on it!

DIY gifts for Dad

Father’s Day can be a tough holiday to shop for. Most dads aren’t into jewelry, they have no use for makeup or nail polish, and a new outfit can be less than thrilling when it’s simply khakis and a polo shirt. Over the years, I’ve been able to avoid the  cliche gift items a few times by coming up with personalized, homemade gifts.

Homemade gifts sometimes get a bad rap. But if they’re done correctly, they can have a longer shelf life than generic gifts. One of the best things about homemade gifts is that you can find something appropriate for all ages to work on. Here are a few gifts I’ve given in the past (from grade school through today) to spark ideas for the sons and daughters in each age group.

I think nearly everyone has made a collage project at some point in his or her life, and they’re an easy way to personalize a gift. Making a collage pencil cup is an easy project for small children, and it’s fun to look back years later and see what reminded them of Dad.

I completed this project close to 20 years ago, and to this day my dad keeps this pencil cup in his office. Cut some photos and text that remind you of Dad out of old magazines and find a jar or old glass in your desired shape. Glue your objects to the outside of the glass, and after they’re dry simply glaze over them with a clear varnish (from a spray can or by painting it on) to ensure the paper doesn’t curl up. Young kids may need some help with the final step.

Craft stores have tons of unfinished wood items that can be transformed and personalized into great gifts. I chose to make a tray for my dad one year in the theme of his  alma  mater and it’s great for holding snacks during a big game. Taping off sections of the wood makes for easy designs when painting, and using stickers for any text (as apposed to stenciling) gives a polished look.

This project is a little more time-consuming than most projects for kids, but sanding and painting are easy ways for kids to help with the finished product. Using a clear varnish here will keep the paint from scratching and reinforce any stickers applied.

A few years back, my dad gave me  a T-shirt  from a bar  in a South Carolina town where we both had attended college.  Because the shirt was a little big for my taste and a little small for his (but much too cool to trash), I found a different way to keep it around — framing it.

By using a shadow box, I could keep the entire shirt intact (with other frames you’ll have to cut out the portion of the garment you want to frame). To add a small personal touch and visual interest, I placed an embroidered Clemson tiger-paw sticker in the corner. Shadow boxes are  versatile in that they look nice either free-standing  or  hung on the wall, so they’re a  good option for someone with limited wall space. This project can  be done by kids of any age. Many families have T-shirts from beaches, restaurants or places  that hold special memories, and all of these are great options for framing.

By making your own gift, you not only create something entirely original, but it usually saves money, too. Father’s Day is Sunday.

Do you have any other suggestions for homemade gifts? Share them!

Go green, earn green at CVS

Recently CVS introduced the Green Bag Tag. The tag, only 99 cents at CVS stores, will earn you $1 in CVS Extra Bucks every fourth visit.

One important note is that shoppers must carry-out their purchase (without a bag), have a re-usable shopping bag, or re-use a plastic bag on their purchase — hence the “Green.” Basically, any time you refuse a one-time use plastic bag, you’ll earn a credit (4 credits = 4 visits = $1 Extra Buck).

To earn the Extra Bucks, you must scan your Bag Tag and your CVS Extra Care card.

For frequent CVS shoppers, you could easily get your money’s worth out of the 99 cent tag. Learning to work the system at CVS can really be an advantage. Combining coupons, sales and Extra Bucks has not only saved me money, but a trip to a larger store like Walmart (where I’d likely end up buying more).

I plan on getting a Green Bag Tag and giving it a try. Have you tried it out already? Do you have any luck shopping at CVS?

Sunday Ad Roundup

Tired of getting your dad a tie every Father's Day? Check out some of these other options.

Hello everyone! I hope you’ve had a great weekend. I’m pretty pumped about this coming week/weekend. Father’s Day is always an exciting time because my birthday always falls around the same weekend, so there will be a lot of celebrating in the next few days!

Now onto the inserts:

The SmartSource coupon booklet is good right from the cover, where you’ll find two Red Lobster coupons, and then inside you’ve got two more for Cold Stone Creamery. Other coupons include tons of pantry and medicine cabinet staples — cereal, allergy medications, yogurt, Reynolds tin foil and more.

As I said Friday, Sears, hhgregg, Staples, JC Penney, Kmart, Belk, Toys R Us, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain and Macy’s all have ads with a Father’s Day theme. Figure out your budget and then go searching. Hhgregg, Sears, Kmart and Staples have the dads who love gadgets and outdoorsy tools covered. JC Penney (more polos for only $9.99!), Belk ($10 off coupon) and Macy’s (20% off clearance coupon) are your best bet for clothing or fragrances (excuse me, cologne). Kmart also has an excellent deal on Wrangler products — jeans for only $15.99 and polos for only $9.99.
I was surprised to find Toys R Us putting gifts for Dad on special, but they’re all over it. You receive a free $30 gift card with the purchase of an iTouch, a free $10 gift card with the purchase of the Sony PSP and a free $25 with the purcahse of any tablet.

Smokey Bones has a flier insert with two coupons, one for now and one for later. If Dad isn’t a fan of sea food (see Red Lobster above), consider using this $10 off coupon.

Craft stores Michaels, Joann Fabric and A.C. Moore are all competing for attention this week. Each store has coupons available on top of their storewide sales.
Michaels is having a Stock-Up Sale, and if you’re into crafting you should do as the sale name tells you! Basics like craft paint, ribbon, brushes and more are $1 or under, and other products like canvases, garden pots and photo boxes are $5 or under.
A.C. Moore is having a Customer Appreciation Sale, and entire stocks of select merchandise are up to 50% off. Crayola products and stickers are all 40% off, and select products in other departments are up to 75% off.
Joann Fabric is has 50% off of select fabrics and buttons, 55% off of wall frames and 50% off of all red tag home decor, apparel and quilting fabrics.
Check the ad for each store to see what fits your crafting needs best.

Target is offering some high dollar gift cards with purchase this week. Receive a $50 gift card with the purcahse of an Xbox Kinect bundle, $25 with the purchase of an iPod Touch, $60 with the purchase of a PS3 and more. Tons of movies and CDs are also on sale.

MAC winner and tips for melt-proofing makeup

Mascara seemed to be where most commenters had the most frustration as far as makeup was concerned. There are tons of variations of colors, wands and formulas available -- the trick is finding the one that works for you.

Happy Friday! First of all, I’d like to congratulate Kaylie, the winner of the MAC giveaway.

Kaylie said, “I use both MAC products and drug store products equally! MAC is a fantastic company and I am crazy for their eye makeup. My absolute must-have product is their line of Paint Pots, which can be used as a base/primer or as a stand-alone shadow. I have oily eyelids (yuck!) and this will keep any shadow from creasing for hours on end (I work 12-hour shifts and I never have creased shadow!). Their products are highly pigmented and a little bit goes a long way. As far as drug store selections go, I am madly in love with Revlon’s Colorstay Eyeliner. It lasts forever, even through watery eyes (thanks to allergy season), is self-sharpening (which makes for easy application) and is also relatively inexpensive. I’m also a big fan of good old Cherry Chapstick! It has a slight rosy tint to it as well as some sun protection, smells yummy and is under $2.00! I’m a self-proclaimed makeup junkie so I’m always on the lookout for up and coming products, no matter where they are sold!”

You’re in luck, Kaylie, because you’re getting two eye makeup goodies in your pack. You can expect to hear from me soon for details about receiving your products.

Thanks to everyone for participating! I would’ve never expected so many people to be interested, and all of your comments were great.

Now, this story couldn’t have come at a better time. This week has been sweltering, and those of us who wear makeup know that hot weather can lead to issues. Here’s an article by the Good Housekeeping Institute with some tips on how to best handle the hot weather and applying makeup, as well as some recommendations for the best products.

Do you agree with their product choices? Do you have any more tips to add?

Melt-proof your makeup

Those hot, humid days of summer can cause a makeup meltdown on your face — but you can prevent it with these five easy steps from the beauty experts at Good Housekeeping.
    Lose the layers
Sweltering weather means sweatier, oilier skin, which breaks down makeup. And the more layers you put on, the likelier they are to slip and slide. Who wants to slather on extra products anyway? Instead, look for a light-feeling multitasker like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Compact Makeup SPF 55 ($14, drugstores) — it gives you hydration, coverage and SPF all in one.
    Pencil it in
Opt for eye and lip pencils over liquid liner and lipstick. Their waxy formulas resist dissolution on damp skin; plus, lip pencil under gloss makes the shiny layer last longer by giving it something to adhere to, says Chantel Miller, senior makeup artist for the MAC Pro Team. For super budge-proof color, look for waterproof formulations. Try Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye and Lip Pencils ($18 each, Sephora). Bonus tip: Store them in your fridge. The cold solidifies the wax for easier sharpening and application.
    Pick a powder
Choose powder blushes, bronzers and eye shadows during the summer; cream formulas melt in the heat. For long-lasting color, first dab on a mattifying gel, like Paula’s Choice Shine Stopper Instant Matte Finish ($22, paulaschoice.com). “It creates a dry base that helps color stick, but it’s not as thick or heavy as a primer,” says star makeup artist Carmindy. Too much primer, says Miller, actually may cause your foundation to slip in the humidity.
    Use high-tech mascara
Sure, waterproof mascara stays on, but it also can take a toll on your lashes. “Chemicals in these formulas can make eyelashes dry and brittle,” says Carmindy. Instead, use a mascara with tube technology — microfibers that wrap around lash tips for a lengthened look. Try L’Oreal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara ($11, drugstores). It won’t come off in the heat and humidity, but will when rubbed gently with warm water.
    Touch up midday
You may be used to applying primer before foundation, but oil-absorbing formulas can also be used on top of makeup to help tone down shine, says Miller. Unlike a powder, a primer won’t cake; unlike blotting papers, it won’t lift off your makeup. Good Housekeeping’s beauty team likes Bare Escentuals Prime Time Oil Control Foundation Primer ($21, Sephora). Pump a few drops into the palm of your hand, then gently press onto oily areas with your fingertips.
    Self-tan like a pro
You can get a beautifully sun-kissed look without spending hours soaking up the sun’s damaging rays. Here, Good Housekeeping’s recommended products for every purpose:
    * Instant (temporary) tan: Victoria’s Secret Beach Sexy Airbrush Instant Bronze Body Spray ($12, Victoria’s Secret); L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze One Day Tinted Gel ($10.50, drugstores.
    * Tinted tanners (to help make sure you don’t miss any spots): St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse ($30, Sephora); Victoria’s Secret Beach Sexy Adjustable Self-Tan Lotion with Shimmer ($14, Victoria’s Secret)
    * Clear self-tanner: Clarins Self-Tanning Instant Gel ($32.50, department stores)
    * For hard-to-reach areas: L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist ($10.50, drugstores)
    * For a gradual self-tanner: Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer ($9, drugstores); Nivea Sun-Kissed Firming Moisturizer ($8, drugstores)
    * To remove streaks: St. Tropez Tan Remover (18, Sephora)
    * To mask self-tanner odor: Scent Secure ($32, Nordstrom)
    On another matter
Spilled salad dressing on your blouse? Immediately sop up any excess with a dry napkin, or scrape it off with a clean spoon. Another trick: Grab a packet of sugar and sprinkle it on to soak up the blob. If you have an instant stain remover, use it right away. No matter what the fabric, when you get home, sponge the stain with a dry cleaning solvent, like Guardsman Dry Cleaning Fluid ($10, guardsman.com). Take dry clean-only garments to the shop ASAP. For washables, apply prewash stain treatment and launder as usual.

Have a great weekend!

Sunday Insert Preview

Shoppers, you’ve got just over a week to finish shopping for Dad. If you thought there were tons of Father’s Day offers last week, this week has even more.

First of all, you’ll find a SmartSource coupon booklet mixed in with the ads. It is full of both restuarant and grocery coupons, so check it out!

Sears, hhgregg, Staples, JC Penney, Kmart, Belk, Toys R Us (unexpected, right?), Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain and Macy’s all have ads geared specifically toward Dad, so there should be something for everyone on sale this coming week.

Smokey Bones has a special coupon insert ready for Sunday, so consider taking the family out for dinner to celebrate the holiday.

Craft stores Michaels, Joann Fabric and A.C. Moore are all gearing up for a big sale next week. Not only are many of the items in the store on sale, they’re also giving you coupons.

Target has a new set of free gift cards available with select purchases, as well as a gift guide for dads come Sunday.

JC Penney Salon has a new ad insert, so if you’re in need of a cut/color or just some styling products hold out a few more days.

CVS is continuing the free gas gift card promotion into next week, and they’re also having a huge BOGO sale. The best part is that most of the products are items you can stock up on and save for later.

Deals for a steamy Thursday: Movies, popcorn, Starbucks and more

A trip to the movies can be pricey, but add on some popcorn and you've really got an expensive date night. Use some of these deals to cut the price.

The freebies and deals have been a little scarce lately, but luckily today I have a few notable deals to share. Did I miss something? Let me know!

*Remember, you still have time to participate in my MAC product giveaway! Click here for more details.

*Living Social has another movie deal today, and it’s a good one! Click here and you can purchase a promo code that will earn you 2 movie tickets from Fandango.com for only $9. Both Regal and Carmike cinemas offer tickets through Fandango, and the print at home feature is really nice (I’ve used it with luck in the past). The deal expires in 16 hours (at the time of posting around 1 p.m.), but the promo code doesn’t expire until September 9.

*Join CiCi’s Pizza Perks and you can get a printable coupon by email good for a free pizza buffet dinner with the purchase of another pizza buffet dinner. Cici’s Pizza has locations throughout the Roanoke Valley.

*Text Yahoo Movies now and you can earn free popcorn at Regal Theaters this summer. Enter your mobile number, open the link to “check in” at the theater, and get an instant coupon for free popcorn. This does require a smart phone.

*Barnes & Noble has a new set of printable coupons, and on especially good deal is the buy one, get one free Starbucks smoothie coupon good through June 13. There are also coupons for 30% off of various best sellers.

*If you’re ready to start Father’s Day shopping, check out Eddie Bauer online. Use the code DAD20 on a purchase of men’s apparel and you’ll receive 20% off.

*Sign up for Home Depot’s Garden Club here and you’ll receive coupons periodically throughout the summer. One of this month’s coupon was a free perennial with the purchase of two.

*Yankee Candle is offering a printable coupon here good for $10 off of a Yankee Candle purchase of $25. The fine print says the coupon is good at Yankee Candle stores and participating retailers (except Target). I know Bed, Bath and Beyond is a Yankee Candle retailer, so you might give it a try there.

MAC Product Review & Giveaway

These goodies could be yours if you answer the question below!

A few weeks ago, we received some product samples from MAC Cosmetics for the summer season. Three of us decided to test  a few of the products and share our findings to help readers as they shop for makeup this season.
I was one of the testers, along with food writer Lindsey Nair and features editor Kathy Lu. In doing this review, we learned that our makeup comes from a variety of places, and we all have different preferences.

Now, we’d like to give a reader a chance to try some products, too.
Tell us whether you use makeup from department stores or the drug store and whether you think higher prices are worth it.

The winner, chosen at random on Friday after 4 p.m., will receive a makeup bag by EcoTools, as well as a variety of MAC cosmetics.

Rebecca Holland
I tested:
* Lucky Green powder eye shadow, $14.50
* Rich Thrills Big Bounce cream eye shadow, $16.50
* Alpha Girl beauty powder, $25
*   Mlle lipstick, $14.50

I liked/disliked: I have been using the beauty powder as blush daily. It’s got enough color to brighten your face without looking unnatural and doesn’t rub off. The powder also comes in a nice, sturdy compact, not a flimsy, plastic one that would normally fall apart in my purse.
Both of the eye shadows were nice, but I liked the cream shadow best. The cream shadow goes on very smooth and stays on all day. When applied the color is pretty sheer, but I added a couple of layers for a darker, evening look. The green shadow is a lot of fun with the right outfit, but I used it very sparingly and blended with a neutral color. It was a little too bright on its own.
I don’t normally wear lipstick, but I decided to test this one  because it seemed sheer and smooth like a gloss. Unfortunately it was a disaster! The shade was Barbie pink when applied (can anyone pull that off?) and seemed to dry out my lips pretty quickly.

I usually use: Neutrogena oil-free liquid foundation, Maybelline mascara, Estee Lauder and Covergirl eye shadow, Carmex  lip balm and Neutrogena blush.

Would I buy? These products are a little more expensive than what I use, but I have very sensitive skin so I don’t mind spending a little more for quality makeup. I’d definitely consider buying the beauty powder and cream eye shadow. The green shadow is fun, but probably not something I would normally choose to buy through MAC. I’m not sure the cost is worth it for a color that won’t get worn much.
As far as the lipstick goes, I think I’ll stay loyal to my basic Carmex .

Kathy Lu
I tested:
* Summer Shower lipstick, $14.50
* Big Bounce eye shadow in Cool Elite (white pearl) and Black Diamond (black with gold pearl), $16.50 each
* Honey Rose Magically Cool Liquid Powder, $29.50
* Bows & Courtseys powder eye shadow, $14.50

I liked/disliked: The Summer Shower lipstick looks pale green but glides on as a sheer shimmer. I like to use it as a topcoat to darker lipstick.
I also have been using the Bows & Courtseys  shadow every day as a liner applied close to my top eyelashes. The shadow is dark hunter green, and glides on smoothly, but is easily blended with pencil liner.
I’m still undecided about the Big Bounce eye shadows, which look and feel like mousse. I use the white pearly one sparingly, as a shimmer on my eyelids. But I tried to use the black one as a liner and found it hard to apply with a brush as an even line. Also, I found it hard to blend. So I don’t know how you would use the darker colors to good effect.
As for the liquid powder, it does indeed feel cool the touch, almost wet. The color was good for my complexion, but because of the odd texture, it’s hard to apply evenly with a blush brush. It does have a lot of shimmer in it, and MAC recommends using it to enhance foundation, which I don’t typically wear.

I usually use: MAC eye shadow, MAC or Clinique lipstick, Clinique pencil eyeliner.

Would I buy? I would definitely buy the eye shadows because I’ve had good experiences with them. They don’t run and are easy to apply.
I would pass on the powder, but mostly because it’s not something I use every day.
While I would buy MAC lipstick, I probably would go with a color instead of the sheer one.
Finally, while I like to put a little sheer on my eyes most days, I would likely find a cheaper product to use than the Big Bounce shadow.

Lindsey Nair

I tested:
* Fresh Daisy eye shadow, $14.50
* Bronze Yourself Big Bounce cream eye shadow, $16.50
* Truth & Light Magically Cool Liquid Powder, $29.50

I liked/disliked: I liked the cream eye shadow, which does not budge all day after it has been applied. It takes some getting used to if you’ve never worn wet eye shadow before, and it needs a minute to dry completely, but the coverage and appearance are great. Best applied with a small brush.
The Fresh Daisy eye shadow has changed my life! Instead of wearing it on my eyelids, I like to dab a small amount at the inside corners of my eyes, then brush a little bit underneath my lower line of eyeliner. This makes my eyes look brighter and my entire face look more alert.
I wasn’t crazy about the liquid powder. It feels cool (literally) when it is applied, but did not provide the kind of cover and blemish camouflage one gets with liquid makeup. Also, it leaves a powdery residue on the face, which could get on clothing. I’d recommend this as a supplement to other foundations, but on its own it was not effective for me.

I usually use: Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse as a foundation, any powdered eye shadow at a reasonable price, MAC lipstick and eyeliner, and Merle Norman eyebrow brush.

Would I buy? I would definitely purchase the MAC liquid eye shadow, and I think I’m addicted to the white powdered shadow for the rest of my life. As for foundation, I will stick with liquid.

Walmart Chic

This outfit in its entirety (shoes, accessories and all) is only $38. Penny Chic breaks it all down for you. Photo courtesy of Pennychic.com.

For everyone who refuses to buy clothing and accessories at Walmart, let me introduce you to Penny Chic.

This site, run by Shauna Miller, has been featured on some pretty big media outlets (like CNN for example), and really sheds a new light on how you can be stylish without spending an arm and a leg. Sometimes Walmart is a bit overwhelming, but Shauna (who once worked at a fashion house in Paris) has some great ideas and breaks down every outfit for you.

Even if you don’t do any shopping for clothes at Walmart, this is still a great place to look for ideas. I strongly suggest this sight for any ladies who have a busy wedding season ahead of them. Attending weddings can be an expensive venture, but there are some outfits available that would totally be wedding-acceptable (like this one).

Spruce up your living spaces

Spring is here and summer is quickly approaching. This is the time of year I  get the fever to freshen up  my living spaces — planting flowers , dusting decks  and finally trimming the grass.

What else can we do to change up our most lived-in spaces, while saving a little money at the same time? Here are a few tips:

* Rearrange furniture: Not only will this change the look of a room, but it’s always nice to remove that layer of dust  under the couch and those crumbs hiding between the cushions.
* Swap out photos: Changing the framed photos throughout your home can add some new visual interest and allow you to put  more of your prints to good use. Consider  some family vacation photos for the summer months.
Look for coupons or sales on photo enlargements and reprints in drug store ads or sites online, such as Snapfish (www.snapfish.com), to save a few extra cents .
* Clean out closets: Get rid of any clothes you haven’t worn in the past year — there’s probably a reason they haven’t seen the light of day. Consider donating or selling any items that are still in good condition and you won’t be the only one to benefit from this project.
* Organize drawers:  Throw out those random receipts, 5-year-old phone books and Tupperware pieces that have a missing mate. Adding a liner to the bottom of a clean drawer makes for cheap and easy clean-up after any accidental spills, and unwrapped bars of soap and dryer sheets can be left in drawers to keep them  smelling  nice.
* Brighten up bathrooms: Simple changes, like a new shower curtain or rugs, can really transform a small space. While I’m a little picky about the quality of my sheets and towels, I don’t mind going cheap for other bathroom items. Check out Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, thrift stores or even a dollar store for  affordable bathroom decor.
* Visit yard and estate sales: One new piece can add a lot to a room. Yard and estate sales are a great place to find unique chairs, lamps and tables for a fraction of department store prices. Some items might need a little work, but the price makes it worth while, and a coat of paint to match your space can be a nice personal touch.
Visit estate sales or auctions on the final day to really find the deals; often shoppers are able to place an even lower bid on leftover pieces.
* Make household cleaners: Baking soda, white vinegar, lemons and plain old tap water are all low-cost items that can be transformed into pet- and kid-safe cleaners.
Run lemon peels through a garbage disposal to freshen drains, sprinkle baking soda across the carpet to remove smells before vacuuming and mix white vinegar and water for a great all-purpose cleaner (especially on windows and hardwood floors).

For the vinegar and water solution, I usually do about half and half — maybe a little more water than vinegar.

Here are a few at-home cleaning recipes that ran in a story in 2006. Know some more tips? Share them!

* All-purpose spray: Useful for sink, tub, toilet, tile and floors: 1/4 cup white vinegar, 2 tsps. borax, 32 oz. hot water,1/4 cup liquid dish soap. Dissolve borax in hot water. Add vinegar and borax solution to a 32 oz. spray bottle. Add liquid dish soap and shake to mix.
* Scouring powder: 1 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup borax. Mix in bowl or shaker.
* Drain cleaner: For slow drains, pour one cup each of baking soda, salt and white vinegar down the drain. Wait 15 minutes and flush drain with boiling water. Pour boiling water down the drain every two weeks to prevent buildup.
Glass cleaner: 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 qt. warm water, 1 tsp. liquid dish soap. Combine mixture in a spray bottle.
Oven cleaner: Sprinkle bottom of oven with water, then sprinkle with baking soda, and sprinkle again with water. Let it sit overnight, wash and rinse.
Toilet bowl cleaner: 1 cup borax, 1/4 cup white vinegar. Pour ingredients into bowl, let it sit for a few hours, then scrub with toilet brush.
